My GP think i might have Fibromyalgia. She's referring me to see someone, don't know which department, She was unsure.

Can anyone share your experiences with me.
No idea what to expect, a little overwhelming!

It's more of a label for symptoms when they've ruled out everything else.

weeme02 · 14/07/2021 18:38

Can I ask what your symptoms are? I'm currently getting tests done to rule other things out too. It's a very daunting feeling

They’ll be referring you to rheumatology.

I actually asked my GP to diagnose me with fibro but he refused, saying it's a catch all label for symptoms, and everything you suffer from in the future will be blamed on the fibro.
Would avoid if I were you.

My pain was actually found out to be severe osteoarthritis (hips are bone on bone) and ankylosing spondylitis. Keep pushing them to do tests on you.

This.
It's really not a label you want. Find out the real cause of your symptoms.

I’ve been diagnosed with Palindromic Rheumatism after an initial fibro diagnosis. It took 4 years to get my diagnosis and finally on some drugs that will hopefully work. Don’t be fobbed off.

Well yes it is a diagnosis of exclusion and basically means they think your pain is psychiatric (fibromyalgia sufferers tend to have a trauma/abuse history).

I suffer with fibromyalgia although it took years to diagnose.normally it's diagnosed by a rheumatologist and to be referred your VP will normally have to rule out other conditions with blood tests. It's normally diagnosed where there is pain in a number of of pressure points over the body.

They don't know what causes it. Some think it may be hereditary, there's some suggestion that trauma to the neck can bring it on or it can be brought on after a viral infection (which is what happened to me).

It is more common in women and can be worse if under stress.

I suffered with pain, extreme fatigue, foggy headed, sleep problems. Some days are good Some days are terrible.if you've had it diagnosed and had it for more than 6 months then it's classed as a disability.

There's lots of info on the internet and there's a fibromyalgia website for sufferers.

Couldn't have put it better myself @TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits

My fibromyalgia was caused by untreated underactive thyroid (secondary hypothyroidism so nit picked up on standard NHS testing) and serious deficiencies in ferritin and vitamin D. All sorted now.

A friend who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia took the advice of the consultant and downsized from her lovely country house to a terrace in town and a,so downsized her very profitable business, because the pain and fatigue was just too much. She actually had a pituitary tumour and now that has been sorted and she's on the right hormone replacement, she is perfectly well.

Please be careful.

It was suggested that I may have fibromyaligia but tbh I think they just don't know what the hell is wrong with me. I have several health issues and no one seems to know the cause of any of them. Our medical system is broken :(
