Any dentists that can help me with teeth whitening.

In the process of having my teeth whitened through the dentist. Using Boutique whitening but it's not worked. Used 4 syringes of the night time gel and had two daytime ones as well and only a very slight difference. Dentist says they have never had this happen before, just wondered if anyone had any ideas why.

I’ve had whitening a few times using trays at home and also in-chair Zoom. It was all Philips though. My dentist did say that whitening can only go so far and that everyone is different. So one person might get 10 shades lighter but someone else only 4 shades whiter.

I now use Crest strips and use them at home as a top up. Much cheaper that anything from the dentist.

Do you know what your starting shade was? C&D shades are much harder to lighten then A&B. C&D often need months rather than weeks of whitening.
Do you have a lot of wear on your teeth? Exposed dentine is very slow to whiten.
Smoker? Nicotine is absorbed into the tooth and harder to whiten out.
Are you a grinder? Grinding causes saliva to leak into your trays diluting the gel.
Are you putting the gel into dry trays and onto dry teeth? Again, any water/saliva dilutes it.
What's the expiry date on the gel? The fresher the better, has it been sat around since precovid?
Is the tray custom made and close fitting? Again leaky trays let saliva in and wash the gel away. If they're made by boutiques lab (S4S) then they'll be high quality.
All these things make a difference, I used boutique for years (including on myself) and got really nice results. They're actually really helpful so might be worth your dentist contacting them for advice if the above doesn't identify the issue.

Does whitening damage your teeth or gums?

Darkrainbow · 14/07/2021 11:39

No, not if you're appropriate for the treatment,by which I mean in line with the law the treatment is being provided by a qualified dentist having examined you first and deemed it appropriate.
I have fixed many cases that have had it illegally done by a beautician or equivalent and had damage and even more where they just haven't had a change in shade.

Thank you Darkrainbow yes my teeth are worn and I am an ex smoker, I am now on my 6th syringe, 4 x night time and 2 x daytime. Any idea how many more I will need and do you think I should be paying for them or should my dentist?

Sorry to jump in , please could I ask your opinion @Darkrainbow as you seem knowledgeable on this subject

I'd love to have teeth whitening
I'm 54 and the teeth are not too bad but I'm told I have age related enamel loss and a small degree of gum disease ( this was a surprise to me as I have no issues , no sensitivity no bleeding )

I have made an appt in august for a local cosmetic dentist to assess me for treatment suitability
Do you have any advice or recommendation for someone in my age group
Thank you 😊
