Ovarian Cysts?

Hi,
Earlier this week i was advised by NHS direct to go to A & E. What started as niggling abdominal and lower back pains became excruciating after a couple of hours (and moved to the right). After a 5 hour wait in A & E you could have peeled me from the ceiling! I have never felt anything so painful in my life. They suspected either appendicitis or a burst ovarian cyst. I was put under observation overnight, nil by mouth, on a drip and painkillers. I had various tests (urine, blood, examinations etc and ex-rays which weren't mentioned again so presuming they were ok?). I was booked in for a scan the next day which unfortunately never happened as they had too many others needing one. Within 24 hours of the pain starting it stopped. Completely. From horrendous pain that had me begging for painkillers, after my last lot it disappeared, just to leave me with a couple of twinges. They discharged me, with the thought that "sometimes women just get these pains and we never find out what it was".

Today some of the pains are back, no-where near as bad but in the same places and bad enough for me to not be as active as I would like. Do you think its something I should follow up with my GP? I've had lower back pain on and off for a while, it started after having dd four years ago, (I just assumed she had knackered my back up ) Mid cycle I usually get abdominal pain for a few days. If I have ovarian cysts will they do anything about them? I dont much fancy the pain ever getting as bad as it did this week thats for sure.

You need a scan really. It's impossible to know what it is otherwise. I think it's pretty shit they didn't scan you whilst you were there TBH

There might be nothing obvious on the scan in which case if symptoms continue they might have a look via a laparoscopy or something.

I would go to your GP and try to get a referral for a scan. Whether they do anything about ovarian cysts very much depends on what type they are and what size

Don't leave it though. It sounds pretty horrible and not something you should ignore

hi littleBlueAlien, i had a very similar experience on halloween of all days. I stayed in over night for 2 nights, had a ct scan and was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst on both ovary. the pain was absolutely excruciating, it made me physically sick. they initially gave me paracetemol (!) then codeine (!!) and eventually 18 hours later - morphine which finally hit the spot. but the pain went, hasnt come back as bad but now still have twinges.

I have since seen the gynae and am booked in for 18 december to have cysts removed. they said the pain was from the cyst becoming twisted.

I would recommend you definitly go back to your docs and ask for a referrel to get a ct scan just so you can rule out ovarian cysts.
