glasses too strong

essexgirl58 · 10/07/2021 18:43

I had my yearly eye test. I was given new reading glasses. They are too strong because when I put them on and read my laptop screen or anything else it looks blurred but with my old reading glasses it looks clear. I do not want to go back and complain because I have already complained when I was given multi focals and had a hard time getting them to agree that I did not like multi focals. Reluctantly they changed the lenses to just reading lenses only but I cannot see properly through them. I am reluctant to go back and say the glasses are probably too strong because they will not agree.

Maybe I should just leave and go elsewhere

You should go back, they could Check the prescription has been made up correctly in your glasses and retest you to check you have been given the correct prescription.

Orf1abc · 10/07/2021 19:26

What strength were your old glasses, and your new ones?

doublemix · 10/07/2021 19:29

A Laptop screen is an intermediate prescription not a near prescription so totally different if your new spec are ok to read with i.e a book or your phone use them for that and use your older weaker reading glasses for intermediate. If they are too strong even to read in take them back. If you are wanting a pair of glasses for intermediate and reading it would be multi focal you need.

essexgirl58 · 10/07/2021 19:37

I put in my post that I had multifocal glasses and absolutely hated them. That is why I got them changed to reading only and if I need intermediate glasses then how come my old reading glasses work for the computer when they are not intermediated glasses

Was only trying to help but won't bother in future if you're giving out reply's like that. I didn't sell you the glasses so no point in having a go at me.

datagirl · 17/07/2021 17:55

You can get computer lenses. I have these for reading and using the laptop and the computer screen at work and they are really good.

I think you should go back to the opticians and explain the problem again. They will want to sort out your problem because it doesn't make sense that your old reading glasses are clearer than the new ones.

This happened to my husband and the optician had put the lenses in the wrong way round.

As a PP indicated a READING (Near) prescription is used for hand held items: phone, book, mail, documents, food packaging etc

An intermediate is used for items about arm's length: laptop, desktop, worktop, tills etc

Your old reading glasses are now your intermediate prescription and your new reading prescription is ok for hand held range but not arms length range.

To put that into numbers as an example:

Old reading prescription +1.50
New reading prescription +2.25
New intermediate prescription +1.50 (same as old reading prescription)

Multifocals combining and distance/intermediate/near prescriptions didn't work out for you. That's ok, not everyone tolerates them. The optician remade them as your new reading prescription but that doesn't work for the range of your computer but your old glasses do.

Welcome to multiple pairs of glasses of varying strength dotted round the house depending on what activity you need them for. Sewing, crafting, diy, mending, painting, housework/cleaning, workshop, gardening, eating your dinner, dials on the cooker/washing machine, looking at the satnav. The list is endless!

essexgirl58 · 17/07/2021 21:37

for the record, my multifoal glasses were just reading and intermediate I have a separate pair of distance ones.

I went back to the opticians today to tell them that I just cannot manage with my new reading glasses I was told to go back next week when the original optician is back because the one I spoke to is new an has not been dealing with me over this issue of verifocals and new readers. For now I am using my old readers which are better for me. The new optician tested me with very small print and said with your new readers you shoul be able to read this very small print and that is why we gave you stronger lenses. I put them on, looked at the very small print an it was blurred. I put my old readers on and it was clear. So all she said was ok an made a note of that and said come back next week

Something is not right an if I am not satisfied next week I will be asking for a refund which they said from day one they would do if I asked

Well that sounds like it's all in hand then. Your original optician has an opportunity to review the prescription and your needs. Hopefully it will get sorted out one way or another.

Think of it as consulting a doctor regarding an condition for which there is a standard treatment that works for the majority but not everyone. If you are one of the minority then you would consult the doctor again and another treatment would be tried.

When multifocals are intermediate and reading but not distance, then they are referred to as occupational lenses.

Eleoura · 17/07/2021 22:25

I do wonder if they gave you a - script rather than a + one? Was is specsavers? I would have asked them to put them on their machine to check the actual prescription.

I spent weeks waiting for new lenses in my old frames- 2 weeks for each set to get back. I then realised that they had replaced the lenses- with the exact same prescription!!!!

sadie9 · 18/07/2021 01:26

Just get a refund. I use a cheap pair of readers and they work for phone, books or my laptop. No intermediary needed there.
I got varifocals, spent a week using them every day, then couldn't continue. Got a full refund and went back using the readers again.

TheAussieProject · 18/07/2021 02:33

Absolutely. Bring them back.
Once I tried specsavers and their optometrist totally messed up the measurements. I couldn't even walk if I had the glasses on as the footpath would move up and down.

eurochick · 18/07/2021 03:31

I've been given glasses with the wrong prescription before. I was told to persevere but they eventually realised I had someone else's glasses. 🙄

Bargebill19 · 18/07/2021 03:42

Op varifocals have all three prescriptions within them, they are a graduated lens. Bifocals are a two prescription lens. @DoorMatCat is spot on.

underneaththeash · 18/07/2021 08:09

They might be wrong OP.
But eventually as your eyesight fir close deteriorates, you can’t use the same prescription for reading and the computer as they’re different distances apart.
