Ds2 has a thing on his back that started off like a wart or something, but isn't so wart-like now, any ideas what it could be?

It is maybe at least half a centimetre across, slightly raised and bumpy. I think it felt a bit weepy tonight after it had been rubbed after he was rough and tumbling with his big brother.

Is it a wart?

Is it in a circular shape at all??

Wallace · 24/11/2007 19:53

yes it is circular

seborrheic wart? not sure about the spelling though - might be worth a google - they are generally nothing to worry about if it is one.

chipkid · 24/11/2007 19:55

could it be mollusum?

Porpoise · 24/11/2007 19:58

sound like molluscum to me...

karen999 · 24/11/2007 19:59

Just asking because my dd had something similar a few years back....turned out it was impetigo. She needed antibiotics to clear it.

It may not be this so best to have it checked out if you are not sure. I noticed something similar in my dd and did not think much of it. Kept my eye on it and in a couple of days it had quadrupled in size!!

I think it is predominalty passed on through infected water. My dd caught it from her cousins. They all shared a bath one night. The said cousins had just come back from Florida and had practically spent the two weeks in various swimming pools!

I am not saying that this is what it is - only to keep your eye on it!

Once she had started the antibiotics it cleared up within days!

Hope this helps.

googled the seborrheic wart thing and pretty sure it isn't that. Not sure about molluscum, isn't that smaller lumps?

Impetigo! My brother had that as a kid and now I think about it it looks worryingly familiar. I will google for pics. I hope it isn't!

He has the doc on thurs anyway so i will get them to check it.

If it's impetigo, it'll be getting bigger and more weepy.

If it's molluscum, it'll stay about the same size (though he may get more 'warts') and gradually go down

poptot · 24/11/2007 20:10

ds has molluscum and some of them get pretty huge, have to attack them then

Porpoise · 24/11/2007 20:11

Molluscum: Waxy, wart-like spots, appearing either in clusters or alone, on the torso, thighs, face or hands. The spots are tender and can itch. Eventually, they burst, crust over and heal.

Wallace · 24/11/2007 20:15

been looking at impetigo and not sure it is. It has grown, but he has had it for more than a week, surely he would have more by now?

off to look at molluscum...

Might be some sort of cyst caused by blocked follicle (sp?)? My Ds2 had one at the beginning of the year (on his upper back, near the shoulder blade) and we never really found out what caused it or what it exactly was, but the doctor gave us some antibiotics and a dressing to keep it clean. It took about a week to clear up. It looked totally hideous though; waxy and big, but not really like a boil. I think with molluscum you get lots and lots, don't you? I would let your doctor have a look at it, just so it doesn't get too sore and infected, especially if it's weepy or catching on clothes etc.

karen999 · 24/11/2007 20:32

Even if it is impetigo it clears up quickly once you have antibiotics!

Don't know how old your ds is but if he is very young I would not tell him what it is! My dd was 3 when she got it and one day when we were on the bus she announced in a very loud voice that she had it... I could have died! Needless to say the seats around us suddenly became vacant!!

Wallace · 25/11/2007 14:38

Lol at your dd karen999 - luckily ds2 is only 16months

Don't think it looks like molluscum, not sure about cyst thingy. It is quite flat, only slightly rised and rough.

Well the gp said she doesn't know what it is. She doesn't think it is impetigo. She says to moisturise it, keep an eye on it and come back if it is still there in a month...

I think I underestimated the size - it is more like a centimetre diametre. Not sure if it is still growing or not. I wish I could describe properly what it looks like.

OP posts:
Wallace · 02/12/2007 21:26

sorry that should be diameter

Is it a raisin?

Sorry, being facetitious. Sounds like an inflamed subcutaneous cyst to me. Moisterising it is a very weird idea though, would you rub oil on a spot?

Take a photo of it and post it on your photo so we can have a nosey.

Wallace · 02/12/2007 21:50

at raisin I do find raisins in all sorts of places mind you, but that is a different fred...

I will try to take a photo tomorrow.
