Would you supplement Iron if your ferritin was 37 ng/ml?

Normal range is 12-100-ish I believe but I saw something about benefits of supplementing if results are under 60? I don't eat a lot of meat but plenty of veg and fruit. Not keen on green leafy stuff tbh. I'm probably peri-menopausal and already take Vit D & B12. Permanently knackered! Any advice/experience much appreciated, thank you Smile

Yes it’s still low ish

Yes true, just slightly concerned about ending up constipated with my sluggish peri digestion!

Yes! I am currently doing exactly that as I think its a reason for my hair thinning/loss as it was the only thing that showed up on the blood test. My Ferritin level was 35.
I take Iron Bisgycinate - I use the Vega vitamins 50mg one - it's highly absorbable and easy on the stomach, I've had none of the digestive/constipation issues you'd usually associate with iron supplements and I have been taking it for about 4 weeks now. My friend was recommended it by her private nutritionist for the same reason, low ferritin.

Meant to add that apparently a level over 80 is optimal - especially for hair growth.

Thanks @curlyLJ for the recommendation, that's great! Have you noticed any difference yet? (I also have thinning hair - joy!)

Not yet, I was told minimum 3 months before I will see an improvement.
How old are you? I am 48 and probably peri-menopausal, which can exacerbate the hair problem. Dr Louise Newton (The menopause Doctor) has done a good podcast on this subject. Here's the link if you're interested:

Thanks Curly. I'm 45. I'll have a listen to that too.

Mine is 40. GP has just prescribed me some for 3 months. Just one a day due to constipation. She said not disastrous but could try and pep it up a bit. I have tinnitus and probably perimenopausal.

I can highly recommended the iron bisglycinate if you're worried about constipation etc. Unfortunately you'd probably have to buy them yourself, but they're not expensive. I've had prescribed iron before and it's awful Confused

I've had it whilst pregnant when my ferritin was 9. Thanks for recommendation. I've got a few events coming up and I'm not even going to start it until they're done!!
