Chronic gastritis anyone?!

Blinkingbatshit · 05/07/2021 22:15

Anyone out there had or recovered from chronic gastritis or duodenitis? I’ve had this six months now (diagnosed by endoscopy a few months ago). I’m doing everything I can (no alcohol, no caffeine, no dairy, no gluten, taking prescribed meds and a whole host of supplements) and nothing is working😭. Could really do with some hope and positivity if anyone can provide some…..TIA!

You poor thing, that must be so miserable.

It sounds like you are doing the right things, Mist Mag Trisil used to be given for that, I don't know if that is still the case. You say no dairy but several drinks of milk every day was always advised, it neutralises the stomach acid.

I hope someone else comes along with more up to date information and that you get some relief soon. Six months is a long time to have to put up with that.

(PS: TIA is an acronym for 'Transient Ischaemic Attack'.)

Maggie, it's also an acronym on here for Thanks in advance Grin

blahblahblah321 · 05/07/2021 22:41

Sorry @Blinkingbatshit , that sounds awful Sad

seepingweeping · 05/07/2021 22:52

I had that a few years ago. It was horrific.

I was given omeprazole, ranitidine and strong cocodamol to help with the pain. It subsided after 3 weeks. I couldn't even imagine dealing with that for 6 months.

Had you been taking a lot of ibuprofen leading up to it? That can cause this as can stress.

I was told to follow the brat diet, bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast. No dairy, no spicy foods and no fried foods whatsoever.

Cheers blah.

I recovered but I still have flares. It took a long time. I ended up on double dose of omeprazole for a while. I don't do caffeine any more and avoid a couple of other foods but life is generally immeasurably better.

It's miserable and it's scary. But you can recover.

Thank you for all the responses!!…my gastritis is caused by bile not acid so sadly the ‘normal go to’ medications aren’t any use, and what I have been given isn’t doing much but I’m sticking with it for the time being as not much choice!! The longer it goes on the more worried I am it will never heal - I just want to sit down and enjoy eating a meal with my family (I’m always on bland…and cooking nice tasty stuff for them just rubs salt in the wound!!). I’ve dropped to 7.5 stone - I look horrific in addition to feeling it😞….I’m just so sad.

Thanks @Maggiesfarm - do you mean magnesium trisilicate? It’s an interesting one as though the antacid side may not be much use to me its laxative effects may well be (if it clears the stomach more quickly too?)

Blinkingbatshit · 05/07/2021 23:35

Thank you @IHeartKingThistle - just need to know that some do recover….I don’t mind a restricted diet or not drinking coffee or booze, I just want to feel normal!!

What were your symptoms? I'm waiting months to speak to a gastroenterologist and have discomfort in area beneath left breast, round to my side and I burp a lot.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 05/07/2021 23:50

I've been taking something called Azulenal for my gum disease. It's an anti-inflammatory and it's definitely worked.
It mentions on the instructions that you can use it for gastric problems.
Might be worth looking at?

Maggiesfarm · 06/07/2021 03:46

Yes that's the one.

It doesn't have a laxative effect, it could possibly cause constipation and patients are advised to keep fluid levels up to avoid this. Used to be standard treatment for gastritis and similar problems, even gastric and duodenal ulcers. Also a fairly bland diet, plenty of milk, soft rice pudding and the like.

Reduce stress!

I feel for you. Good luck.

SpindleWhorl · 06/07/2021 05:22

That's a hellishly restricted diet considering that it's not even working. Are you sure you shouldn't be eating some probiotics like kefir, or some Greek yogurt?

I might have gastritis. The pain is awful. I'm currently on a gluten-free low fat diet, but haven't had the endoscopy yet. US scan ruled out gallbladder. Blood tests showing B12, folate and sodium deficiency, interestingly, on top of existing hypothyroid. I'm a known autoimmune disaster area.

What have your bloods been showing?

Coyoacan · 06/07/2021 05:27

My daughter cured herself by taking a dessertspoon of ground linseed in hot water first thing every morning for over three months. Of course she also avoided and avoids foods that hurt her stomach.

Blinkingbatshit · 06/07/2021 06:28

@LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone - thank you, will give it a go!

Blinkingbatshit · 06/07/2021 06:31

@SpindleWhorl - bloods have been fine in all tests, scans clear too. Dr now not interested as there’s ‘nothing they can do’. I hope you get an endoscopy and some answers soon - it’s really miserable!!

OP posts:
Blinkingbatshit · 06/07/2021 06:35

@mumsnoangel - symptoms are burning sensation in my stomach and duodenum, occasionally replaced by upper abdominal bloating / fullness sensation. It’s pretty much constant. I have had some intermittent back pains too but not for a while. I hope you get to speak with someone who can help soon!

OP posts:
Blinkingbatshit · 06/07/2021 06:37

@Coyoacan - that’s interesting, was it specifically for bile gastritis? I’ve been putting linseed/flaxseed on my meals as I’ve read it can help…will try it in some hot/warm water and see if it has an effect!!

OP posts:
Maggiesfarm · 06/07/2021 09:10

Apple cider vinegar is also good for gastritis.

Coyoacan · 06/07/2021 12:51

Sorry, OP, she was just diagnosed with gastritis, not bile gastritis, but she's been twenty years cured

Blinkingbatshit · 06/07/2021 13:50

Thanks @Coyoacan - I’ve given it a go anyway!!

wineandsunshine · 06/07/2021 21:08

Try actimel?
You have my sympathy op - I've had gastritis several times and I find stressing over it actually made it a lot worse.

anfieldgal · 29/04/2022 18:17

@Blinkingbatshit Hi blinking, I really hope you're over this. I have similer symptoms and would be grateful of any advice how you've coped. So miserable with the same 😥x
