painless anal blood loss

am getting a bit worried: have been having what seems to be quite a lot of (red) blood in the toilet bowl for past two days (though possibly in the water it seems more than it really is).

am not constipated, haven't been either for at least a month (starting eating activia and guess what, it does work ). altough i have had some bad abdominal pains as well.

anyone any ideas what it could be?
i think if it continues i'll see my gp on monday...

Could it be haemorrhoids? I think they can bleed? Probably a good idea to see gp though.

Habbibu · 23/11/2007 20:07

Piles? Go and see your GP anyway, to set your mind at ease, and because it can very occasionally be a sign of something more serious, but piles can bleed, and it is quite bright red.

AMerryScot · 23/11/2007 20:08

Bright red blood can come from an anal fissure - a small break in the skin caused by straining. It can take ages to clear up, despite being superficial, because each visit to the toilet can reopen the wound.

It should only really be a smear on wiping.

Deffo go to the GP. You could have a feel to see if you can feel long knobbly bits (piles) they normally feel slightly squishy if you prod them

my mom had this a while back she got all worried as it was about the time they started putting bowel cancer posters in public toilets! she went gp and was referred to hospital she had polyps (sp?) and they were removed in day surgery!
try not to worry but do go to your gp!

Honneybunny · 23/11/2007 20:18

no, it really is not just a little bit on wiping. was wondering if first it might have something to do with me starting on contraceptive pill (cerazette): at first i thought i was having another period... but it was definitely the other end... .
fortunately it doesn't hurt at all. though it might be slightly itchy .

Go and see your GP as soon as you can. Might be nothing (piles or fissure) but could be more serious. You need to know one way or another.

CoteDAzur · 23/11/2007 20:35

When I visited a specialist after dd's birth with what turned out to be anal fissure, doctor said it would only be worrying if (1) there was more blood (mine was a little bit, mostly on the toilet paper) and (2) there was no pain (mine was very painful indeed).

Go see your doctor soon. You might have a colonoscopy, which I hear is rather unpleasant, but the treatment is apparently not a big deal.

Good luck.

If it's itchy it def sounds like piles, that would tie in with the bleeding too. I think any bleeding that is a sign of something serious is not bright red fresh blood but much darker

qjbtc · 25/11/2007 18:05

I agree, my dh has had bowel cancer and the blood loss was more of a ruby red colour not bright red. Still get it checked out to be safe. As my hubby is testament to, if caught early enough even bowel cancer is very treatable.

Honneybunny · 26/11/2007 22:29

qjbtc, so glad your dh is ok!

hi everyone, thanks for posting! i guess what happens when you see (so much) blood in the bowl is that your thoughts start running wild (esp. after googling a bit, which is something that i know i shouldn't do, but can't resist somehow...). i have lost a very dear colleague to bowel cancer, who was just a few years older than i, and my dear MIL has fortunately just been given the all clear after colon cancer. so it was a thought that flashed by when i suddenly saw the blood, esp because it was painless....

anyway, i have been to the gp today, adn it looks like it's just my piles that have come back. i had them really bad after ds2 was born (though they were incredibly painful then). the gp discovered a skin tag, which is according to him indicative of piles higher up (sorry if TMI) although he couldn't actaully feel them.
i am now supposed to keep it soft, so bring on the prunes [grin}!!

thanks everyone for posting!
