has it gone away

I’ve had it for a couple of years now. Not sure of the cause, but probably a combination of:

-dry, often infected/inflamed ears (drs useless)
-Peri menopause
-stress (difficult ASD teen)

It’s better when I’m less stressed, and I’ve gotten used to it a bit, too.

I was very interested to read what a PP wrote about carbs! I’ll be investing and experimenting with low carb solutions.

just want to say thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. before tinnitus I used to only have ear ringing for a few seconds while standing up quickly and occasionally for a short while. unfortunately it seems I have it constantly after a head injury. I heard a loud sound after that last a few seconds. fine for 5 hours then the ringing started while I way laying in bed to sleep after head injury. was horrible and so intense and took me by shock. I waited for it to go assuming it was only temporary...it lingers and has never gone since. its so high pitch and loud like a high frequency sound wave over and over. the only relief is having a shower and sitting on the floor. it drowns out the sound. white noise doesn't work and getting to bed is almost impossible. have 2 little ones and really worry how im going to keep coping. I'm also pregnant so cant have a mri but I want one to rule out any brain inflammation or damage to my brain and ears. I'm an introvert and use to love quiet and silence. makes me sad using that word. never even been a fan of music as always liked quiet. now I'll possible never experience that again. I'm young only 20 and fear it'll get worse with age. I have bouts of very loud screeching it my ears sometimes on top of it. not sure both or just right side but it gets so loud sometimes much more than the baseline ringing. I constantly have headache from the noise. I'm thinking maybe vitamins, magnesium, melatonin or higher blood pressure might help as apparently low blood pressure amplifies the sound. doctors won't even refer me to a neurologist or emt ear specialist. I want to though. they keep telling me to wait and see or just live with it. I want to find the cause and also see what could help the symptoms. I'm trying to keep hope that the brain can heal itself and maybe it will get better or go? for now I am panicking but trying to keep calm

what does it sound like for you? is it high pitched or low pitch, loud or medium etc...I just can't believe in this day and age there's no cure, I've heard for some people it only last days weeks or months

Bloody hell, OP, that sounds awful. Can't believe your Drs are brushing you off like this when your problems are clearly beginning to impact on your mental health. Do you think they're not taking you seriously because you're young/female/ maybe not too assertive?
You should try again, and if they won't budge insist second opinion.

Good luck Flowers

Valenciaoranges · 05/07/2021 12:05

I've had it about 18 months now. I'm sat here typing this text and the ringing is so loud!! It's so annoying, but mainly notice it when it's quiet. I play sleep stories at night.
I have absolutely no idea why I have it?

Tossblanket · 05/07/2021 12:10

White noise helps when trying to sleep.

Tossblanket · 05/07/2021 12:11

Sorry, posted before reading thread.

SallyB392 · 05/07/2021 12:18

Yup, I have had tinnitus for about a decade now following an acquired brain injury caused by a brain bleed. It varies in intensity, but is usually a high pitch alarm, sometimes I can hear my heart beating too, usually when I'm tachicardic, and it varies in intensity. I've actually never tried anything to manage it, just assumed I'm stuck with it along with the loss of balance, one sided weakness etc. Is there a treatment?

Helleofabore · 05/07/2021 12:48

I have had it since a teenager due to loud headphones, loud music in the car and nightclubs. That tinnitus is like the singing of water through water pipes.

I think it also then means that I am quite sensitive to noise as I am listening carefully in case I miss something.

Then about 18 months ago, I got pulsatile tinnitus. The ENTs think this is due to ageing and one of the bones near my ear drum thinning to a point where a blood vessel is causing the pulsing in my ear.

That is really noticeable when trying to sleep.

I got it as a child from a high dose of aspirin. Had it over 30 years. It’s never gone away but you learn to ignore it. In fact I use it as an indicator of when I’m not well as it’s louder when I’m poorly. It doesn’t bother me, had it too long.

PraiseBee · 05/07/2021 13:06

I've had it since delivering my first DC. I don't notice it during the day and at night I use the relief app. Sorry, it sucks

Writersblock2 · 05/07/2021 13:47

@Cazzovuoi

Mine goes mostly away when I don’t eat many carbs. I guess the inflammation from all the sugar grains and starch also impacts my hearing.

I had popcorn yesterday afternoon and wicked tinnitus all evening Hmm

I can vouch for this. I mostly eat carnivore and keto, depending, and the odd times I’ve eaten carbs for more than just one meal, mine gets worse (along with joint aches).
Pinkpowderpuff · 05/07/2021 14:28

OP, I have a medium pitched whine in left ear that sounds like it 'wavers' in tone/pitch, sometimes like a mosquito! I also have two different tones in right ear - one very high pitched and the other a bit lower and on top of that I have a constant extremely high pitched electrical sounding hiss that seems to come from right side of head but hard to pin-point. The ear noises are manageable as I can only hear them when I'm in a quiet room. The high pitched electrical hiss is the most annoying as can't be masked by any other noise and I can hear it pretty much over anything else.

Pinkpowderpuff · 05/07/2021 14:32

@notgoingtoapologiseanymore Have you been on the BTA website? Lots of useful information on there and they have an online chat feature so you can talk to one of their advisors for some support. Hang on in there. I found the first 6 months horrendous and although I'm still struggling on some days it's definitely got easier over time. Obviously I would love for it to disappear but I don't think it's likely, so I'm just hoping it carries on getting easier to live with.

Katyy · 05/07/2021 14:33

I’ve had it at least 10 years in one ear then it started in the other as well. I’ve had an MRI scan to check their we’re not tumours.
My ear felt blocked last week, really loud tinnitus too, I then had a couple of days were I was dizzy. The Dr has made me an appointment at the ENT clinic thinks it might be menuires disease.

Pinkpowderpuff · 05/07/2021 15:51

The other thing that encouraged me was learning that 1 in 8 people have tinnitus to some degree - that means it's extremely common. So although you might feel very alone, you really aren't. And the majority of people are able to live a 'normal' fulfilled happy life without the tinnitus affecting them negatively.

ImaHogg · 05/07/2021 21:24

I have has tinnitus for years but have also been anaemic for years too and I think it’s connected, my levels have fallen recently and the tinnitus is worse. I also have tmj disorder and bruxism which doesn’t help!

notgoingtoapologiseanymore · 06/07/2021 01:04

pinkpowderpuff

most people don't have chronic tinnitus that's constant. they have intermittent tinnitus which comes and goes which can't really be counted. and they count those people in the 1 in 8 study. I mean people with actual tinnitus that is constant and doesnt go away

Spyro1234 · 06/07/2021 01:14

I have it from loud music. After several weeks I got used to it, and now I only notice it if I read something like this thread! It's pretty loud but your brain can adapt

Maggiesfarm · 06/07/2021 02:22

There was an ENT Surgeon in London (now retired) who specialised in tinnitus called Jonathan Hazell. He believed he had found a cure for tinnitus and actually did have some success.

I looked him up and found this. I don't know if it will help you or not but it's worth a try.

Zebrahooves · 06/07/2021 22:46

I have loud and constant tinnitus and I've had it for years. It is a loud hissing, with a high pitched oscillating whistle and a lower pitched hum.

I have just had to try to learn not to listen to it and ignore it. On a night I listen to podcasts to go to sleep, during the day I tend to have music or the TV on.

It is hard and I would love to hear silence, but it isn't meant to be. The more I focus on it, the louder it seems. It is really loud right now.

Lonelydaisy · 06/07/2021 23:08

I've had it for 3 years after a stroke, never gone away I ignore it most of the time.
My grandma's had it for 25 years and counting after a brain tumour. She said its the brains way of saying ouch I've been hurt I'm upset Confused strange women.
Some people have it for no reason at all. It can last for days or years or a life time. I might miss mine if it ever goes.

MiaRoma · 07/07/2021 12:39

Since my first AZ vaccine in March and the headaches/face pain and neckaches caused from that.....the tinnitus started about 8 or 10 weeks ago. Its horrible.
