Any tried and tested methods? DH in real pain, I even feel sorry for him

Gargling with soluble (ie dispersible/dissolvable) aspirin.
Or salt water until you can find some soluble aspirin LOL.

foxinsocks · 23/11/2007 18:20

there's a spray you can get from the chemist.

Chloraseptic? something like that. It's cherry and it numbs the throat. It gives a few moments of blessed relief.

Walnutshell · 23/11/2007 18:23

Thanks. He's using clovonia and it's not really helping so perhaps should have bought chloraseptic.

Will suggest salt water - really? Does that help??? Daredn't use aspirin as he is already on both paracetomol and ibuprofen...

He isn't one to complain so I know he is feeling rotten.

Salt kills nasties and cleans out wounds, will help speed up the healing process.

spudmasher · 23/11/2007 18:31

Warm honey and lemon is soooo soooothing. Better than any 'medicine' imo.

Walnutshell · 23/11/2007 18:32

Thank you! Keep going - I'm going to give him a list of options once I've put ds to bed.

Your DH has my sympathy. I had tonsillitis earlier this year and it was torture. Went to GP who suggested the spray (forgotten name) which didn't work at all.

By evening of that day I certainly couldn't have gargled. My throat was so swollen I couldn't swallow, not just because it felt like broken glass but because I choked each time which was even more excruciating. I sat up in bed all night, leaning forward, spitting saliva into tissues (sorry if tmi) to avoid swallowing at all. The next day I couldn't speak and was dehydrated - not surprisingly - and couldn't speak. In the afternoon I got an emergency appt @ GPs and was given antibiotics.

I had had sore throats as a child but nothing like that. Never again I hope. So sorry for your DH. No real suggestions what to do - you will gather nothing worked for me - tho' once a wee bit better I think the first thing I ate was icecream. Sucking an ice cube might help?

Walnutshell · 24/11/2007 09:15

merlotmama - that is EXACTLY how dh feels. THE sore throat started suddenly on Wednesday afternoon and he quickly went downhill - this morning he is still absolutely no better. Dare I ask you how long it lasted?

Hmm, is it usual for the pain to spread and get worse after a couple of days?

I get awful throat and chest problems, have a bad chest infection right now, for tonsillitos I found the only thing that worked was fairly heavy duty painkillers so that I could manage to swallow plus the most numbing spray I could get from the chemist.

If you catch it in the first day then sandlewood oil in warm water with honey can help.

merlotmama · 25/11/2007 20:47

Yes, mine got gradually worse. Started on the Thursday (just back from hols - blamed germs on plane) and went to GP on the Monday. I was very vexed that the GP didn't give me antibiotics on that first visit but he said he wouldn't as my phlegm wasn't green!!!!

It had been over 20 years since I last had antibiotics so not one to ask for them without cause.

Once I got them I had a difficult time trying to swallow them but they did work.

Your poor DH having this over the w/end. How is he today? If not better I would def. go to GP tomorrow.

Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 22:01

Thanks MM, halia. He was feeling significantly better yesterday although still poorly and dipped again this morning but is clearly through the worst and went to work this afternoon (just has to keep that tonsillitis breath to himself!)

He put catching it down to attending a toddler group lunch where he "obviously didn't have the germ-proofing of mothers"

Personally I'm just glad I don't have to keep the sympathy going - well, tbh, that ended sometime on Saturday when "are you feeling any better honey?" turned into "for goodness sake, no improvement yet?"

my bf just had this, i forced him to drink loads of fluids, gargle with dispersible aspirin, and take paracetamol, but it was so bad he had to get anti biotics from my gp as a temporary patient

gp said it was a very impressive bout of tonsilitis

his temperature was raging, but he said he was freezing

the next morning i had to change the sheets, they were so wet from sweat, and he couldnt work for a week, which is bad for him as he is self employed

Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 22:07

Now you're just competing lou33 - will have to tell dh I wasted my sympathy on him when he didn't have sodden sheets and the doctor certainly didn't describe his illness as impressive... he's just gonna have to try harder!

lou33 · 26/11/2007 22:10

yes tell him to be a man

bf was v well behaved actually and didnt make much noise at all

not even when, on the way to the gp, we discovered a dustcart had trashed his car while collecting hte rubbish in my street

Walnutshell · 26/11/2007 22:11

Blimey, bet your bf has got a proper sixpack and ev'rythin'!

lou33 · 26/11/2007 22:13

lou33 · 26/11/2007 22:15

i think had he not been sick he would have kicked up more fuss about his car getting trashed tho, he just didnt have the energy lol
