Urine infection

I think dd2 possibly has one. She wet the bed last night and also said that she has been going to the loo more when she is at school and that sometimes it hurts.

I have just sat on the phone for 30 min to get her an appointment for today as don't want to leave it over the weekend. Have had to opt for an emergency one, so i may never actually return as they said we could have a very long wait.

If i take a sample with me, will the doc test it there and then, or is it sent off or something ?

No sure - they may be able to test it there and then. They may just treat for a UTI anyway.

Oh good, don't want to have to go back and forth with her as we have to go by bus.

Perhpas now she will listen to me when I tell her that she has to wipe herself the right way.

When I took dd in summer complainig of problems when she needed a wee I took a sample in a clean jar and the doctor tested it there and then in his room but he also asked for a new sample to send away to be sure of what she had because the test didn't show anything was wrong. When the second test came back she was given antibiotics.
Then he said when a child has an infection there they need to really have a scan to make sure everything is OK. He said they would get in touch with me about an appointment - 3 weeks later a nurse called and said it would be in 4 weeks at the clinic. I was long gone back to Germany by then though!

They should be able to do a test there and then which will give pointers as to whether she has an infection or not,ie presence of red blood cells, protein etc but it will have to be sent away to be cultured,to see if bugs actually grow, and also to see what antibiotics it is sensitive or resistant to.
Most doctors would start a course of antibiotics especially if she has other signs of infection such as a temperature or is generally unwell.
Hope that helps!

They test it then & there to look for an infection, for which they prescribe antibiotics straight away (something like Trimethoprim).

However some UTIs are resistant to some antibiotics so they send it off to see exactly which type of antibiotics she should be on. They will then change the antibiotics if necessary.

Blimey, way more complicated than I thought then.

She isn't showing any other signs of being unwell, and hadn't complained of any pain until I asked her this morning, but I don't want to leave it just incase.

If he tests it and there is no infection present is there anything I can give her to treat it ? Cranberry juice perhaps ?

I had to run around after dd and force her to drink loads, I had bottles of water standing all around the house for her not to be able to use an excuse for not drinking! So, important that she drinks as much as possible even if it means giving her lemonade (that's what the doctor told me to do)

nutcracker · 23/11/2007 09:31

I have problems getting her to drink as it is, which possibly helped cause the problem ??

Also she doesn't go to the loo as soon as she needs a wee, I know because I see her jigging about and ask her if she needs to go. She always says no, but then 2 min later she rushes off.

I know, same here. The week that she had the infection I had to nag and nag at her to go to the loo, drink, go to the loo etc! She is always too busy playing to bother going to the toilet.

My dd (4) has just gone back to school after a terrible urine infr=ection. I took her to the dr on MOn with a tiny sample. It wasenough tho for him to take one look at (very cloudy) and say it was an infection and he prescribed anti biotics. Only trouble was apparently urine infections can also make you sick which is what happened to dd. She was so so sick for 3 days - couldn't keep water down let alone anti biotics. The dr had to rpescribe her anti sickness drugs just to ett the anti biotics down her. Within 3 hours of the first lot of anti sickness and anti biotics she was a different child and back to normal . So... get her down there asap. Don't let her get to the state dd was in. If those anti sickness drugs hadn;'t worked she would have been in hospital on a drip.

She isn't allowed fruit juice and has to drink tons of water.

Blimey Leslaki, that sounds awful, hope she is better now.

I took dd to docs and he tested her very clear and healthy looking sample and said it was fine , but has sent it off for proper testing anyway.
