Pain in lower left abdomen, increasing...

JengaJuice · 27/06/2021 21:44

I’m just curious to hear if anyone else has similar experiences. I am planning to fill out an e-consult for GP tomorrow.

I am actually a nurse, but paediatric!

Basically, I’ve had increasing pain in my lower left abdomen in the ovary area.

I was diagnosed with PCOS prior to first pregnancy commencing 2012, fibroids also noted prior to first pregnancy.

I have had intermittent sharp left sided ovarian pain for several years - I didn’t religiously track this alongside menstrual cycles, but it would generally start to increase in the week or so prior to period. Only ever on the left side. I have always presumed that this was related to either ovulation or a cyst.

However, I have experienced increasing symptoms for about 18 months. Initially pain was intermittent, but has begun increasing in frequency over the last approximately 6 weeks and symptoms have also changed, as I have started to experience some referred pain/symptoms. Over the last (approx) six weeks it has started to spread to side of buttock, up left side towards ribs (makes me
want to dig fingers under ribs to relieve this), and down towards knee on front of the leg, not back, with a nerve type of pain in knee. I know that sciatica may be a differential diagnosis, but it really doesn’t feel like that.

When trying to sit I am very aware of it. It can be similar to a pulled muscle feeling, but in ovary area. It doesn’t feel like a musculoskeletal pain. It’s more of a pressure sensation, but when it becomes painful it is incredibly sharp and takes my breath away. Over the last couple of days I am have noticed that this pressure and pain has increased so that I am feeling it almost constantly. Can be difficult to get comfortable and it is starting to wake me at night. I can’t ease it with changing positions etc and the sensation makes me feel nauseous.

I am finding myself feeling incredibly fatigued, though obviously since my sleep is disturbed this could be a contributing factor! However, I’m finding myself with ‘brain fog’ which is very frustrating in my line of work.

No depression etc.

I’ve been experiencing significant bloating and uncomfortable.

When urinating I sometimes need to change position to fully empty bladder, also noticed increased frequency.

Recent changes in appetite - now decreased, and last night I vomited after a small meal.

Occasional acid reflux - have cut out any triggers for this such as occasional fizzy drinks etc.

Have been taking anti-inflammatories and paracetamol with no effect.

Previously dysregulated cycles prior to pregnancies. Cycles are now regular: 29-34 days for last couple of years. Periods can be very heavy with lots of clots and frequent management of sanitary products. No bleeding between periods.

Trying to eat and drink well!

In addition to own history of PCOS, recent maternal history of breast cancer (Mum, great aunt x2 and great uncle). Genetics to be carried out imminently. Maternal history of endometriosis.

I tend to just put up with these sorts of things, as most nurses do, but I’m noticing this a lot now. Today I’ve had trouble with sitting and standing, but it just doesn’t feel like a hip issue.

Sorry if this post is garbled - I guess I’d just like to hear any other experiences. Thanks!

Probably important as well to note that I’m 34!

I don't know, but it sounds like you need to get a doctor's referral to see a gynecologist. At least then things can be ruled out.

twointhemorning · 29/06/2021 17:40

Go to GP and request referral for a urgent scan of your pelvic area. Ask for bloods and for them to check your CA125 levels (markers for ovarian cancer).

JengaJuice · 29/06/2021 18:52

Thanks both - I sent an e-consult to the GP yesterday morning so I should’ve had a call by today. Hopefully they will call back tomorrow!

I wonder if you've had an ovarian cyst burst ?

rainbowfairydust · 29/06/2021 19:56

I would get some scans done, probably day 8 to 13 of your cycle.... I have pcos and always get left ovary pains as I approach ovulation, they lesson after but are still there so they are probably painful for 10 days a month, lots of throbbing, aches and then sharp pains and the needing to change position to wee is what I get too. It's absolute bollocks that you can't feel ovulation!
I would get it checked out though incase it's an actual cyst not just the usual pcos ones

JengaJuice · 29/06/2021 20:05

I don’t know if it’s a burst one or not - I would’ve thought it’d be more of an acute pain, when I’ve seen teenagers present with cysts...

Thanks :) I’m sat here now and I can feel it. It’s all the way through the month now. I’m aware that it could be a musculoskeletal thing, but it doesn’t feel like it at all and the bloating is really bugging me. Still, when they call back I will encourage a gynae referral. I have a friend who is a gynae consultant actually so might ask his opinion...

PS @rainbowfairydust that sounds rotten!

Sounds like endometriosis- I have both this and pcos (lots of other things too)..
the bladder issues could be endometriosis on the bladder too? I had it on the diaphragm too which gave me sharp pain under ribs. Also can be found on bowels - do you have pain there at all, especially going to toilet?

buckleten · 29/06/2021 20:12

It sounds a bit like diverticulitis or diverticular disease, which I have..

Grainjar · 29/06/2021 20:19

I had lower left abdominal pain and awful bloating. I've had scans and the CA125 blood test which didn't show anything. Dr said to try Fibogel for a few weeks to see if it helps. It has, so embarrassed but I think it was constipation in my case. I hope it's nothing serious in your case.

Confusedaboutlots · 29/06/2021 20:21

go to GP and ask for blood test and pelvic scan. It could be your ovaries, diverticulitis, colitis, even your appendix if it’s a sharp pain.

Book it tomorrow

olivethegreat · 29/06/2021 20:24

Is it triggered by exercise ? I ask because I worried about lower left abdominal pain for a full year before a physio diagnosed a tight psoas muscle. They can easily tell if it's that. It also radiates down to my thigh where it is very painful .

Dizzybintess · 29/06/2021 20:26

This sounds exactly the same as my Endometriosis xx
please make sure you get a referral or go to A and E x
I have been waiting since july last year for a scan sadly x

olivethegreat · 29/06/2021 20:27

The bloating though I'd say endo, having extensively researched this! GP will give you a scan to rule out cysts and a hernia . I saw a gynae for something else and mentioned my pain and he wasn't remotely interested he said it wasn't a gynae issue

I think get scans and also see a physio

Namechange600 · 29/06/2021 20:31

If you think endometriosis is a possibility and also if you think bladder or bowel endo, ask to be referred to a BSGE centre. They’re experts in endometriosis. A general gynaecologist is not the right person for endometriosis. It needs specialist care especially if it is outside the pelvis.

cherrytree63 · 02/07/2021 08:10

Sounds like my symptoms of diverticular disease. To begin with I only had pain around ovulation.
After about 6 months the pain increased, like a red hot poker being pushed through my body. I couldn't sit down, could only lie down or stand up as bending hurt.
Went to GP and said I thought I had an ovarian cyst and she referred me for a scan.
Before I got my scan appointment the pain became excruciating and I went to a&e, had a scan which showed no cyst, and had further tests to get my diagnosis.
Hope you get some answers soon Flowers

Allthegranola · 02/07/2021 08:16

Have you had any bowel investigations? Diverticular disease could be a possibility.

JengaJuice · 02/07/2021 12:08

Thanks all - unfortunately, I’m no further along with it. Did an e-consult which wasn’t returned. I chased it up on Wednesday and it hadn’t registered on their system so I emailed my copy to them and they said that they’d put me on the list for yesterday. No call back - tried today and just had a recorded message saying that they are having tech problems...

But symptoms are still there. Slightly increasing - had a moment when it really flared yesterday, with referred sciatic pain. I’ll chase it up with GP next week. Really appreciate the responses - thank you!
