Kitten pee on clothing

Hi I could really do with some help, my 4 month old kitten has decided this week to use my 1 year old washing basket as a litter tray (she has a litter tray) all of his clothes stink of wee, it's all brand new clothes as I've just moved up a stage. I've showered all the clothes and put them on a wash but will they be ok for him to wear or should I just throw them? I'm really worried about it😪

Why are you so worried? I would just wash them and assume they were fine.

Just wash them. They will be fine. Wash them twice if you are really worried.

You probably need to change your litter more often if he's doing this.

I'm just worried that there may be something in the wee that will cause him to have a reaction or affect him in some sort, ive tried looking into it online but all it comes up with is the smell, I probably am over reacting I've just never owned cats before

My cat went through a phase of weeing on any clothes left on the floor. Hot wash 60 degrees for the clothes with plenty of detergent should be fine but it may be worth replacing the actual laundry basket as I’ve found that bags or anything that can’t really be ran through the machine is almost impossible to get the smell out. And if it still has any urine scent on it he will keep going back

Thanks for your advice, I feel alot better with posting this, the laundry basket has already gone in the bin lol I will buy one with a lid tomorrow to stop her from doing this again

Wash as hot as possible with biological washing powder. Biological is important as the enzymes break down the urine. You might then want to wash once more with your usual detergent if you use non-bio.

Make sure his litter tray is clean, also be very careful with the laundry basket itself. If it can be cleaned with enzyme spray (like plastic) such as 'Wee Away' or washed in the washing machine do that, but if it's wicker it probably still smells faintly of wee which will encourage the kitten to keep using it as a toilet!

There's nothing in the wee itself which will cause a rash as long as it's washed in the machine it will be absolutely fine.

I speak from experience as I had a wonderful cat who was utterly disgusting when it came to peeing places he shouldn't, his was anxiety related because of other cats spraying outdoors. I got very good at cleaning things as I have a very sensitive sense of smell and he went on cat happy pills.

My son has eczema so I can't use any other washing liquid than the one I already use😪 but your advice is very helpful thank you

There's nothing in the car see that will harm your son

Wash the clothes - if using biological detergent then DO NOT wash as hot as possible as the PP said, the enzymes in biological detergents only work effectively between 30-40 degrees so hot washes inactivate them

If the clothes were new your cat is probably reacting to a bundle of fabric that smells of 'outside' and peeing on them in order to make them smell familiar. Scent is v v important to cats.

Is he neutered?
