I am pretty sure that in your first 12weeks you can't take anything for diarohhea. Stop eating anything but a little dry toast and drink plenty of water. After 12 weeks I think you can take immodium and similar - but check with your chemist first.

Morphine is a heavy duty narcotic. I can't imagine that it is a good idea to take it when breastfeeding or being pregnant!

X posts - mmm - you may well be right. I was hoping that someone who categorically knows the stuff in question would come on here and say yes you can drink gallons

Not sure about kaolin and morphine..but my GP prescribed me "kaolin mix" when I was about 8 weeks pregnant...

i had to take something for diarrhea and i'm only 8 weeks along.

it and the vomitting were dehydrating me quite badly.

i'm still recovering.

i also had to be given an anti-diarrheal and anti-emetic whilst 13 weeks pregnant with DD2. in hospital.

sometimes, when it starts to dehydrate you, you do need medication.

Might be better waiting it out. Personally I've never taken anything for diarohhea and I've had it bad before, to the point where I didn't eat for 2 days and water was going through me but I hate taking medications at all unless I'm feeling like death so lol.

I'm surprised mophine is prescribed in pregnancy so easily, morphine the very strong painkiller? It will cross the placenta so I wouldn't take it.

I agree with expat re the dehydration but I doubt most people need to take anything unless it's severe like she had.

i don't see the point in suffering and getting even more ill if there's no need.

it sounds like yours was so bad your GP thought you needed some help.

and, at 6 weeks, there's no placenta to cross.

I had the dreaded 'bug' courtesy of my 4 and 2 year old DS's at 5 weeks and I didn't take anything. Paracetamol is as hard as it gets for me during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

people have had to have their appendix out whilst 5 or 6 months pregnant and used morphine and their babies were fine.

i mean, they give you diamorphine as pain relief in labour if you want it.

it's been around a long, long time.

I'm sure there can be side effects though, as with everything taken in pregnancy. Clearly if you needed an op then it's different. No placenta at 6 weeks no, but still will go to the baby.

I'm with you AussieSim, I rarely take that as well. I've just got over the worst flu bug I've ever had and felt like I was dying but only took 3 paracetemol in a week and a couple of lemsip type things with just paracetemol in to bring down my 105 temp.

I'm of the opinion that it's worth suffering to make sure the baby isn't affected so that's what I do, works for me.

Oh and I also had to look after 3 dcs aged 5, 4 and 10 months who also had the flu.

the disease itself, including high fever, can also have side effects to the foetus.

so 'suffering for hte baby's sake' can actually be just as harmful as controlling the effects of a disease with medication.

that's why Putthat saw her doctor and discussed it with him.

Putthat, if you need a second opinion, why not ask your GP or midwife to phone the consultant OB at the hospital and ask her/him to discuss it with you.

Well, here's your award for Stiff Upper Lip, Jodie.

But not all of us find that something they're able to do, for one reason or another, that's why it's important to discuss anything like this with a doctor.

agree with every thing expatinscotland has just said!

morphine just makes the baby a bit sleepy, but does't hurt it!

kaolin (as i have just read up) bulks the stool
