Mouth ulcers ruining my life!

Lemmings123 · 22/06/2021 19:01

Ok slightly over dramatic but does anyone else have this problem? I've suffered with these for so long and they are so painful, the only time I've ever been free of them is during pregnancy but obviously I can't get pregnant all the time. I've had all the blood tests and nothing can be done, seems like you just have to live with it!

Has anyone else suffered so badly with mouth ulcers?

Please don't say use bonjela as I will throw my phone down the toilet Grin

It's silica in toothpaste that irritated me. Anything whitening and abrasive. Usually use corsodyl original.

EKGEMS · 23/06/2021 00:49

I've had these off and on but really ramped up with long COVID-I'm watching this with interest! My dentist said there's some new prescription strength topical Rx if desperate. At one point I had six sores at once

Hannsmum · 23/06/2021 01:07

Lysine !!!!

If the mouth ulcers are canker sores?

Nanalisa60 · 23/06/2021 04:47

If I drink to much orange juice I get them.

starrynight21 · 23/06/2021 05:50

I've had them for years - often I would get multiple huge painful ones, on the tongue, inside my lips, down my throat. I couldn't eat for days /weeks and could hardly speak. I was totally sick of people telling me "use Bonjela" etc !

I then saw a specialist who took a biopsy of one of the ulcers ( pain !!!)

I was diagnosed as having herpes ulcers , ie caused by the same virus which causes cold sores. I have a regime which works miracles for me every time I start to get an ulcer.

As soon as I feel the "tingle" which heralds the arrival of an ulcer, I take 3 Famcyclovir tablets . These either stop or at least limit the growth of the ulcer. I also use local anaesthetic gel ( Lignocaine 5%) if any ulcer still manages to grow.

I can honestly say that these treatments have changed my life. I no longer have to spend weeks in severe pain, unable to speak or eat. I actually feel like a normal person . I'd highly recommend going to see your GP and getting the ulcers investigated , and seeing a specialist .

Good luck !

SLS free toothpaste. My DH used to get them constantly and now he's not had them for a couple of years.

weegiepower · 23/06/2021 07:14

I have always had them awfully too and the only times I haven't was the 2 times I was pregnant. I used to get them when I was run down and stressed and as a teen and early 20s would often have about 15 in my mouth at a time and it was hell.

I was told by the dentist years ago to try taking a high strength vitamin b12, I now try to always take a good amount of vitamins and I eat much better than I did as a teen/early 20s and have found those together have helped (but I don't know if that was kick started from not getting them during pregnancy?) now I've noticed I only get them during ovulation and just before I start my period and tends to be 2/3/4 at a time instead of 10+, I have long cycles so for me there are weeks between those two times and I track everything and that's the pattern I've noticed.

weegiepower · 23/06/2021 07:16

By the way, vitamins i will always take are b6, b12, high strength magnesium, so likely to be one of those that's helped most!

Learningatmyownpace · 23/06/2021 09:00

Folic acid saves me. I had terrible ulcers for years and now take two folic acid tablets at night at the hint of an ulcer. Nothing there by morning

CharlotteRose90 · 23/06/2021 23:34

@iminthegarden Oo funnily enough I have colitis Aswell haha so there’s definitely a link somewhere

HopeClearwater · 23/06/2021 23:41

Do you mean the aphthous ulcers with the crater in them? The Iglu ointment helps if you coat the ulcer with it.

Enough4me · 23/06/2021 23:45

Zinc & Vit C were recommended to me and works. They are readily available together so I'm guessing I'm not the only one benefitting from this mix. The cheap unbranded ones are fine.

quarterpounder · 23/06/2021 23:46

Hi op, I had these all the time up until about 12 years old. My parents took me to a homeopath who gave me one pill and they stopped. Only had a handful since and in mid forties now. It may work better with children I guess but maybe worthy a try. They're awful so feel for you. Hope you manage to get it sorted. X

I have very sharp canine teeth & they must rub a bit - I get ulcers near them if I'm run down. Anbesol (which 0.9% lidocaine) works well to numb the pain (as initially stinging like bugg**y) - works loads better than bonjella.

longtompot · 23/06/2021 23:48

My ed had them for years, she thought due to her medication, she used to use Oraldene to help. She then realised she had an issue with dairy and cut it out, and the ulcers stopped!

RubyGoat · 23/06/2021 23:55

I used to get absolutely rampant mouth ulcers, sometimes I'd have 12 or 15 at a time, I struggled to speak clearly or eat due to the discomfort & would regularly lose weight because of them. My dentist & GP were stumped. I used Oraldene mouthwash when they were really bad but it does cause you to lose quite a lot of your sense of taste for a day or so after each use. So, not ideal, but it did help.

I've barely had a single ulcer for several years. I don't know if it's related but I take a lot of vitamins now (for an unrelated condition). Vitamin B complex, magnesium, zinc for the past several years. The vitamin B is a pretty high dose. I also cut out caffeine completely & I rarely drink fizzy drinks as the artificial sweeteners were triggering my illness - again, I don't know if it's related.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 24/06/2021 00:08

Anbesol and Gluten free / healthy diet seems to help, lots of sugar makes them worse.

Clusterfckintolerant · 24/06/2021 00:21

Topical anaesthetic gel will give you immediate relief for a start. Allows you to eat something. A hot drink will relax your mouth too and can help you get through a meal.
Kenalog will fix an ulcer isn't available here, but it is available internationally. I get it from NZ online pharma, comes in the post. All above board. Also doxycycline 100mg capsule, mix the capsule contents in water, x3/x4 daily. Gargle. Ask GP for prescription. Works like a charm.
Use SLS-free toothpaste.
Take a look at anti inflammatory diet.

Ask GP about Behcet's disease, along with food intolerance.

crayray · 24/06/2021 22:49

I used hydrocortisone muco-adhesive buccal tablets when I have one. Also avoid SLS in toothpastes.

1983mum · 24/06/2021 22:50

I went gluten free and cut out Prosecco. No more ulcers

hollieberrie · 24/06/2021 22:57

Vitamin B complex stopped mine. If I don't take it for a couple of weeks they come back

hollieberrie · 24/06/2021 22:58

Forgot to say.. it was a pharmacist who advised me start taking it when I asked for advice about constant mouth ulcers
