He's getting a bit skinny-malinky.
Part of the problem is he gets bored of sitting to eat, though he has a goodish appetite. So meals are long drawn-out affairs. We do eat good food as well, I'm not really worried here, I just think he's a bit more waif-like than necessary.
What are good snacks, that have more protein and good stuff in than fruit, muesli bars, etc?

Cheese. A good sandwich made with seedy Vogels bread, butter and cheese is an excellent high calorie snack

stripeymama · 21/11/2007 19:24

Home made smoothies - blend yoghurt, banana/other soft fruit, bit of honey if not sweet enough.

Trail mix - either bought or make your own with seeds and dried fruit.

Egg custard tarts? Bit sweet but not bad as cakey stuff goes.

Toasted sandwiches if you have a toastie maker - cheese with tomato/beans/carrot/olives.

Houmous with breadsticks and vegetable chunks (cucumber, carrot, baby sweetcorn, whatever) to dip.

Prunie · 21/11/2007 19:27

DH was in the US recently and had a peanut butter milkshake: peanut butter and ice cream blended up [drool]

DS doesn't do peanut butter, the rotter. Or avocadoes (can understand that one)

Actually while I'm here, I had an avocado, pear, orange and lemon smoothie the other week that was delish.

Falafel and hummous are good too
My ds particularly is a dainty eater, and I feel easier in my own mind if I have got a round of Vogels sandwiches and a plate of porridge down him
Avocadoes (or home-made guacamole) are a great idea

foxinsocks · 21/11/2007 19:27

lol lulu. You see, we have both had to fatten up children before, I can tell

stripeymama · 21/11/2007 19:28

Homemade ice lollies - just freeze the smoothie in lolly moulds.

Bowls of cereal with fruit on - porridge is great snack for before bed.

foxinsocks · 21/11/2007 19:29

yes, I love falafel and hummus and always try to ignore how many calories they contain!

lulu25 · 21/11/2007 19:30

no

my DS is only 10 months and hasn't even TRIED peanut butter

i am just a pig

BroccoliSpears · 21/11/2007 19:31

Avocado and banana smushed together on a piece of toast. Yum.

Prunie · 21/11/2007 19:32

Good ideas here thanks
Esp like the idea of a pre-bed snack - he has milk but I might make him have ready brek or something instead

yogurt drop pancakes

1 egg (beaten with fork)
150ml milk (full cream)
150ml plain/Greek yogurt (full fat)
1 cup/ 150g self raising flour

You can add either a pinch of salt or a tablespoon of maple syrup if you want to add taste.

Fry desert spoonfuls in a non-stick or lightly oiled pan.

My ds likes his with marmite and then dipped in maple syrup, or a slice of cheese on top.

Good source of protein and calcium.

shrooms · 21/11/2007 20:06

If my ones are very active or in a lanky phase I put tahini on things such as toast, pasta and crackers/ as a dip for veggies. It is ground sesame seed so extremely healthy and high calcium/protein/unsaturated fats.

Also adding some neutral protein powder to usual drinks/smoothies/hot cereal works well as they don't taste it and a protein boost is sometimes great for them. I like hemp as it is very high in iron and omega 3, and also soy is good.

stripeymama · 21/11/2007 20:13

Oh yes proper snack before bed is good way to feed them up and to send them to sleep!

Porridge and brown rice (so maybe milky rice pudding) have some sleep-promoting qualities IIRC.
