He's had a cough and a snotty nose for about a week or so, so i took him to the gp on Monday, where a med student checked him out, and said he was fine. then today, after 2 sleepless nights and a bout of vomiting i took him back to see the nurse practitioner who listened to his chest again and shrugged at me. she said she's seen a lot of this at the moment, but it's not a virus or anything, so it can't be treated. he's now vomiting after every milk feed, refusing all solids (even yoghurt, which is most unlike him!) and very lethargic. what do i do???

just had to google pyrexia but now i can nod wisely.

if there's no treatment for it, is it really worth me going back to the dr's? it's a half hour walk, and a bit of a PIA if i'm honest. if all they're going to do is say "Well, yes, BabyUrban has xxxxx but there's still nothing we can do" it's a bit pointless. i'll keep an eye on his breathing and take him out for some fresh air in a bit.

the trouble is (as i've just said on the PN thread) he's still cheerful and bright, it's so difficult to get the dr or nurse practioner to take me seriously when he's there grining and chuckling at them!

Horrible time of year for all this kind of thing. Isobel has ut fallen asleep on me again, something she doesnt normally do unless nursing either... Her snot turned green 3 days ago...

perhaps I ought to bring out a snot chart... you know, different shades of clear through to yellow and green.. match it up, and know what to do... do you think it'll catch on??

I do hope he feels better soon. Thing is, there is always a chance, its now an infection which might respond to antibiotics? maybe before it wasnt on his chest, but now it is? I understand your dilema at the walk etc... just go with your instincts, they're usually better than most others.

really hope all our Dc get better soon.

Our DS had something very similar to this earlier this year and we also were going up the wall. Had a bad cough and cold and kept throwing up all the time for about two weeks. It's just terrible, every feed was coming up either immediately or an hour or two later plus the fact he was shattered all the time because he wasn't eating properly or sleeping.

Our (completely disinterested) GP told us that it's because of the amount of mucus in their stomachs and digestive tracts from the cold/ infection and there's no reason to worry and nothing they can do - the cold will just pass and the vomiting will pass too. We went back three times because we were getting stressed about it but got the same response each time. Partly cos they're crap and couldn't give a toss and partly, to be fair, because I don't think that there is a lot they can do.

No real advice I'm afraid except to say if it's similar to what DS had, it will pass naturally so try not to worry too much. All we focused on was getting small quantities of milk into him as often as possible (he was about 15 months at the time).

My dd also still got runs/cough/occasional vomit and no appetite after having vomited non stop for 2 days...she's 11 months. She seemed herself, playing etc, for the first few days then got very tired and lethargic - took her to GP, got reassured - and now she's very very slowly on the mend. I think.

I keep a very close eye on breathing, because she nearly died of bronchiolitis at 4 weeks - without a temp, with just cold symptoms but lots of vomiting. And six hours before she was whisked into HDU she was BFing and alert. So I spend a lot of time, seeing as she's had about six bugs already this winter, wondering whether its serious or not

My rule of thumb is, if she's playing and seems bright, I might take her to GP for a cough or small wheeze, but I dont' worry too much.

If I'm worried about dehydration, ie if she's not crying tears/wetting nappies/her fingernails don't turn pink fast after being squeezed - I'd take her to hospital, or to GP if not too bad.

If she's recessing (ribs pulling in) or wheezing a lot, I'd take her to hospital or call an ambulance.

Hate, hate, hate these bugs (doesn't help that I've got one now!) and wish all your LOs better soon, preferably without hospital visits.

cestlavie, that's exactly what the gp said to me today!! she said ds is a "happy wheezer" i tried to point out that him sitting quietly on my lap and smiling was him being lethargic, but i don't think she took me very seriously. anyway, she's given us some anti-b's, so we'll see if they help...

Dd2 has been given anti-b's too, the doctor said she has a cheast infection
