That dizzy feeling when you stand up too quickly

I get it a lot and it's getting worse, although I've never fainted. In fact I don't think it's when I stand up too quickly any more, it's every time I stand up if I've been sat down for any length of time.

I've always had low blood pressure, although no one's ever been concerned about it and I have a very low resting heart rate, 36 but I am very fit.

I did go to the GP about the dizzy spells about 2 years ago and he completely dismissed it as nothing to worry about, he even laughed when I asked whether my low heart rate was cause for concern.

Would go go back or is it just one of those things?

I’d go back. That resting heart rate is very low, and I’d be concerned about blood clots.

in the mean time, stand up slowly in stages ( go from lying to siting to standing with pauses in between). Also "pump" your feet up and down to get blood circulating out of your legs before standing, buttock clenching works well too.

I've had this my whole adult life as has my mum. It's not something I've ever really worried about or taken further. I've learned to live with it.

That said I have very normal blood pressure and heart rate and otherwise very healthy. Your low BP and HR might make you want to investigate further and push for a bit more information.

Hello!
I sometimes get something similar. Doc diagnosed it as Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Nothing scary. Something to do with crystals/particals in your inner ear not realigning properly when u change positions. Usually resolves in a few days but if not there are exercises that u can do. Maybe worth a Google? Just a suggestion but always go back to doc if u are unsure x

I've had this all my life and I'm 63. It's not quite as bad now, I often used to black out after I got up and walked a few steps.
My mum had it and both DC have inherited it.

I have it too - I have always assumed it's due to low blood pressure.

FictionalCharacter · 20/06/2021 21:49

Sounds like postural hypotension. If it’s getting worse it should be investigated.

I have a naturally low blood pressure and get this fairly frequently. However, mine got significantly worse in early pregnancy and then improved a lot when they put me on iron tablets, and I my iron was only slightly under the recommended level too. No one ever actually said the two things were related, but it might be worth looking into low iron levels in case you have other symptoms/getting them checked?
