NIts/head lice. My 8 year old daughter has got these from school. I have put on full marks lotion, combed, removed every egg I could find and have been very thorough. I put lotion on for second time last wed. I was away for the weekend and this morning I found another walker on her, just a couple of eggs though. However, last night I found them in my hair. I used lotion and combed through removing all that I could but as I cant see exactly what I am doing, can you please tell me what will actually work. I can keep on top of dd, but if I dont get all of mine out they will just keep hatching. PLEASE HELP.

When I get them I just comb and comb with the nit comb.

If this is the first time for you, sympathies, it took a few days before I could laugh about it. Honestly they do go if you keep on combing the walkers out. Once all the eggs have hatched and you have physically combed out the walkers while they are too young to lay more eggs you are nit free. It's quite simple really.

Give it a couple of weeks say, comb night and morning and crush the critters in the sink.

There's a new comb with spiral type blades, but we haven't had nits since I bought it, so I can't tell whether it really does get the eggs out as well as the walkers.

Don't despair.

How do I know if I have got them all out of my hair, as with my dd I actually pull them out with my nails as they are stuck fast, but as I cant see my own hair properly I have no idea if they are all out? I am having my hair recoloured on sat, will this kill any eggs left? Do I need to tell hairdresser about full marks in case of reaction? My head still feels itchy, yet I have found nothing!

Neem oil products are said to be good for killing off headlice. Its a fantastic herb with many beneficial qualities so it's worth a look. The Neem People sell a shampoo.

Batters, the oil on head thing sounds a much quicker treatment method than mine. Oil is supposed to be fantastic for the hair anyway.

I have just spent spent nearly 3 hours combing myself and 2 dc. DS1 was combed before school this morning. Nits are the bane of my life, this is the 3rd time since july that we've had them. Have found that the Nitty Gritty comb is by far the best (the spiral blades one)especially for long hair. I use full marks on myself as the oil actually makes my hair look nice the next day, but its far too oily for the dcs who look like they've been dipped in a chip pan if I use it on them. Just use a neem oil/tea tree conditioner on them and comb religiously every 3 days for 2 weeks. I know we'll get rid of them but its a lot of work! I curse the parents who 'Are just too busy to comb for nits'. Bring back the Nit nurse, or why not a 'nit day' at school, get all the kids lined up and comb everyone. I would be only too happy to go in and help. If all the schools did this on the same day it might just help to eradicate the buggers! Sorry, rant over.

Sorry I haven't answered your recent questions...
With combing using a normal nit comb the empty egg cases would still be stuck to your hair and would grow out with the hair.

I believe the spiral comb would yank the eggs off as well, so that might be what you want.

I don't know about any effect of colouring, maybe be brave and tell the hairdressers in advance that you are treating for nits and perhaps ask about teh itchy skin

The itchy skin could be because you are combing your head too violently, it only needs to be done gently as there aren't any eggs on the skin.

If you are really itchy around the base of the hairline by your neck it could mean you are still being bitten by the odd walker and you have got sensitised to being bitten. That sort of itching just goes away as I catch the walkers and am not being bitten any more.

teatree works, I use a teatree shampoo then conditioner then nit comb (while conditioner on) also have teatree nit repellent and so far no nits on either DS despite letters from the school saying there is (another) outbreak.

Have been using tea-tree shampoo for over a year and - touch wood - haven't had them since.

I found for me the best thing was to get in a bath and wash hair their put condidtioner in - and just comb and comb and comb. If you do it ever 2/3 days you will break the cycle.
