Hunker's DS1 has recurrent tonsillitis - anybody else's child?

hunkermunker · 20/11/2007 19:15

he's on my lap so typing hard

he's had it three times in four months

bad - horrible pussy tonsils, swollen glands, fever the last two times, although not this time. He also vomits regularly with it - three times yesterday, four today.

Doctor prescribes antibiotics, and says the risk of a tonsilectomy greater than that of tonsillitis - they don't perform the op unless children have it between 6 and 12 times in a year.

what have your experiences of it been? anybody else's child had the op?

I would second the homeopathy - I used to get recurring tonsillitis form age 16 to 22, started taking homeopathic remedies and it has only reared it's ugly head twice since (13 years).

Was stress related with me - although interestingly my Dad, brother and Aunt have all had theirs out after problems. I refused twice. You just end up with laryngitis instead though if you are a 'throaty' person. From an alternative point of view - you hold your emotions in your throat and inability to express yourself or held in anger can cause throat problems.

Hope he is feeling better soon - wee soul - it a horrible thing and makes you feel lousy.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/11/2007 20:01

Piffle - the risk of the infections travelling further down was another reason that we didn't have dd's out but TBH it's not something that has happened with the boys.

dingdongmerrALYonhigh · 20/11/2007 20:02

My DS has similar tyour DS Hunker, has had it 4 times in 6 months and then has been a little better during the summer - I was hoping to hit the magic 6 target, He's got till Feb!

He has twice had to be hospitalised due to breathing problems from massive, infected, pustulous...(shall I go on ) tonsil. He is 3.3, has asthma and severe special needs. Now has to take really strong ABs as Amoxycillin seems to not work.

I agree with DDF, it shouldn't have to be this hard to get them out nowadays.

He attends a SN nursery - had 50% attendence in Spring and summer terms.

Piffle · 20/11/2007 20:02

held in anger
no wonder my throat is always sore
I wish I could rage out loud

dingdongmerrALYonhigh · 20/11/2007 20:05

Wow you lot post fast! My DS has Cefalexin every time now, sorts it out too.

santascRUMPELedsuit · 20/11/2007 20:05

Piffle - buy a punch bag - then you can vent it physically!

Or if you watch I'm a Celebrity - you can shout at that silly woman Lynn, destroying all the hard work complementary health and spiritual people have been achieving over the past 20 years. sigh

S101 · 20/11/2007 20:07

My lo also has regular bouts of throat infection, always the tonsils.

We often go down to the doctor, no stranger to it now.

Doctors wont do anything but give antibiotics

hunkermunker · 20/11/2007 20:08

Interesting - I've never had a cough (well, twice - once v recently, once whooping cough, so that's kinda allowed!) - but I always had sore throats.

I should get cross more vocally, maybe?!

Piffle, my tonsils are similarly vile - I looked down my own throat today with a blue light torch (couldn't find my normal one!) - I don't recommend it if you have even slightly warty tonsils - fucking HELL it looked awful!

Thanks, all - v helpful - I think if he keeps getting it, there'll be a difficult decision to make - I can't bear the thought of him having a GA

I asked my Dr if it runs in families - I am sure it must be a gene thing but they just haven't discovered it yet.

Piffle · 20/11/2007 20:12

hunker I know, I dread dd needing something, whch is very likely at soem point, be it for her heart or eyes...
am avoiding thinking about it for now

hunkermunker · 20/11/2007 20:14

Yes, that's the best idea, I think, Piffle [head in sand] Poor DD Harder for parents in many ways, I think, because the children don't know it's coming.

OP posts:
Piffle · 20/11/2007 20:15

I guess... I've had gazilions of GA's
I think they are the mutts nutts to be fair
Magic stuff

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/11/2007 20:18

dd has had loads of GA's; I don't think it gets any easier. I shit myself worry myself silly everytime.

Hope ds gets better soon hunker.

Pinkchampagne · 20/11/2007 20:19

Sympathies to you & your DS.
My DS1 used to suffer several bouts of tonsillitis each year, and would get really poorly with it. Like your DS, he would be very unwell & vomit a lot. It was really horrible, and when he was 4.5 I finally got him to see a specialist, who put him down to have his tonsils removed, but at around that point things seemed to suddenly improve, and he never did have the op in the end as there was no need.
He is 8 now, and hasn't had tonsillitis since before his 5th birthday, so I'm hoping he kind of grew out of it.

Hope your little man feels better soon - it is horrible when they are so poorly.

hunkermunker · 20/11/2007 20:20

I've had several GAs too - six, I think, plus sedation at dentist (wouldn't be allowed, that, today).

I agree, better than having ops whilst awake (although after I came round from one, for abdominal surgery - a laparoscopy - they'd not given me any pain relief. I lay, whimpering, before the nurse came rushing over and jabbed me with morphine!).

My mum had her hip replaced whilst awake hunker. Had an epidural. She said it was fab . Had her cataracts done awake too [weirdo]

VeniVidiVickiQV · 20/11/2007 20:29

Awww

He's such a sweetie. They refused to take mine out as a child too. I was off school once every 6-8 weeks too.

Can you ask for a referral to ENT anyway?

hunkermunker · 20/11/2007 20:48

Will do, I think, VVV, yes. He's such a poppet and has been so good - hate to see him ill

Saggars - ick!

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 21/11/2007 00:07

He's been sick again

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 21/11/2007 00:08

hunkermunker · 21/11/2007 00:24

Thank you! No idea who you are, but thank you! Not worried for me though - just DS1 I'd be more "oh fgs" about it if he was whinging But as it is, he's just ill and I feel so sorry for him.

OP posts:
ihatethisman · 21/11/2007 00:30

ds2 fell over this eve with his tootbrush in his mouth and nearly passed out with the pain/stress etc.
i know what you mean about feeling sorry for them, if you could just cuddle all the pain away or take it on yourself, then you would.
ds2 just woke up crying and shouting "cuddle cuddle" too, poor little one

hunkermunker · 21/11/2007 00:32

Oh, poor lad

Hope he's better soon too - that must've been horribly painful for him
