Sorry, what reactions to expect with MMR

Ds 22mths is due to have his MMR in the morning after finally booking the appointment. I feel sick with worry and am trying to prepare myself about what reactions he might have. Will he be sick for long after. Have tried to look on internet but would just like some other moms to tell me what to expect.

I think it varies from child to child. Both of mine were just a bit whingy & had a slightly raised temp that night (dosed up with Calpol though which helped) & were then fine the next day.

I was just thinking about it, as have just got back from the doctors where my ds1 had his 2nd MMR (pre-school booster), & is now feeling very sorry for himself - but I think that's just because he's far more aware of the needle, etc...

fairydust · 04/11/2004 16:56

my dd was fine when she had hers no problems at all.

Ive got to have one as well .

jamast · 04/11/2004 17:43

they'd just started MMR when my son was younger - he had it and was quite ill for a while. However, the benefits far outweigh what could happen if kids don't have it. Even though it made DS ill, I have perental responsibility for my baby grandson and after lots of sleepless nights worrying about it - I let him have the vaccination, and he's fine. Obviously depends on the individual.

whimsy · 04/11/2004 17:47

Thanks, I just had visions of him being really ill for a couple of weeks Do you think it would be wise to give him a spoon of Calpol before we go?

Yeah - calpols great. Also do baby nurofen now and that can be given at the same time as Calpol - Although I very rarely give either, when needed ... I do swear by the combination

muminlondon · 04/11/2004 21:30

My dd was fine at 18 mths, but a bit whingey for a couple of days after. She was much better than after the early baby jabs which was a big relief. I didn't give Calpol until the day after when she was a bit hot at bedtime.

codswallop · 04/11/2004 21:31

nome here - ion fact ds3 slept through!

zippy539 · 04/11/2004 21:43

None here either. I completely sympathise though - dd has hers next week and I'm not looking forwards to though I am not anti-MMR.

codswallop · 04/11/2004 21:43

me non plus

My kids had a fever about ten days after the MMR jab - just treated with lots of fluids and calpol/nurofen as required.
However, make sure your ds's skin is clean beforehand as my dd recently had a very bad reaction to her pre-school booster (not the MMR). I don't want to worry you and am totally in favour of immunising, but dd developed a very nasty infection following her jab. See this thread . It had to be reported as the GP had never seen a similar reaction.
When my ds1 went for his flu jab a few weeks later, the nurse got me to wash his arm thoroughly there and then, just to make sure that couldn't happen again. Of course, no-one has actually said it was infected (that would be admitting blame), but she was prescribed antibiotics and still bears the scar(10x8cms) which they said would disappear after two weeks max. It has only faded very slightly.
I must point out that this is totally unusual and will in no way put me off having my kids immunised, but I will take great care that there is no chance of this happening again. It just never occured to me that this could happen - was more concerned about all the normal reactions I expected to see! As it was, she suffered none of those and is well recovered despite being left with a large circlar redness around the injection site.

bubsylocket · 05/11/2004 08:01

My dd had no reactions apart from a slight moan straight afterwards, thankfully as she does not like taking any medicine - I can never get calpol or cough mixture down her without it all going down her clothes or on the floor. Do any of you mums have the same problem trying to give medicine ?

whimsy · 05/11/2004 08:59

Thanks for putting my mind a little at rest
WE will be going soon and I still feel sick about it, but I know it's for the best. Will let you know what happens. Hopefully he will be fine because ds hates Calpol and like bubsylocket's dd it goes everywhere.

Glad I'm not the only one fretting about the MMR jab. I've been putting off taking DS for his for lots of reasons: the bad press, his age (15 months felt too young for such a major jab) looking for a reputable clinic which offered separate vaccines etc... However DS is now 21 months, definately not autistic, I've failed to find a private clinic that I could trust and to date none of my friends children have had problems so I'm about to book an appointment. I'm happy to hear that the after effects aren't too bad - was planning on taking a couple of days off work just in case!

muminlondon · 05/11/2004 13:42

Good luck - I was nervous about it all too, but was never convinced that single jabs were any safer. There have also been measles epidemics in my area. But I'm still glad I waited till 18 months and am now very relieved that I don't have to take dd for any more jabs for 2-3 years.

whimsy · 05/11/2004 16:42

Well, he had the jab at 11 am and so far (4.30pm) he is fine. He wasn't too happy about it and held his arm when daddy walked in, but he's had a big sleep and seems fine. Fingers crossed

Oh, good for you whimsy! I need to schedule one for my dd. I shouldn't be so nervous about it, really, as the DTP was probably far worse....

Hope it goes well for you tonight!

polly28 · 05/11/2004 23:55

my dd had virtually no reaction to the mmr which she had at 18 mos,my ds had a fever and quite spectacular rash all over ,about a week ten days after the jab.He wasn't well but not ill enough to seriously worry.he had it late, just had it three weeks ago and he is 25 mos.

Gobbledigook · 06/11/2004 22:37

DS1 and DS2 - no reactions at all to MMR at 13 months.

No qualms about giving it whatsoever.

eldestgirl · 07/11/2004 10:57

I put DS2's calpol/baby neurofen in a bottle with about 3mls of milk. It all goes down without any hassle that way. Has anyone else experienced coughing/vomming with baby neurofen? I did try it once and I have to say it did sting my throat.

DS1 had no reaction to MMR at all. DS2 9s due to have his in a couple of months...

wendy14 · 08/11/2004 18:19

DDs 1 and 2 had no reaction to MMR. DD1 did throw up quite vigorously after children's nurofen. Not normally a problem except this was on a Boeing 747 2 hours before landing. And we only had half a change of clothing and none for DH whose lap she was sitting on.

jamiesam · 08/11/2004 21:17

My ds2 (15mths) had his MMR last Monday. HV provided helpful sheet which advises to expect reactions 7-10 days after the jab - including small rash, temperature. Today day 7 and no reaction to speak of - we have both been a bit loose yesterday and today - presume something we've both eaten!
