My therapist has suggested this for me. I dont know anything about it. I am getting terrible flashbacks/nightmares and she thought it might be good for me. Does anyone have any experience of this technique?

It's a useful technique but takes lots of practice and you have to really buy into it.

Yes - my friend Debi does it - she is a life coach and it is one of the skills she uses. Her email is [email protected] - she is in Scotland but will know of someone who will be able to help or someone near you Hope you get is sorted.

I suppose how well it works depends on how open you are subconsciously to it. It is basically about association ie you maybe asked to remember a time when you felt very happy and content in your like - a particular event or incident - you will usually be asked to focus on the mental picture of this event and then to emphasise the memory of how happy you were, make the colours brighter, the noise louder (laughter for instance) until you almost feel you are back in the moment - you may then be directed to 'anchor' that memory by for instance clicking your fingers so that in the future when you click your fingers your mind will immediately return to that fantastic memory and in theory that should give you a boost and eliminate negative feelings. That is one way of utilising NLP.

that's the gist of it, yes. It gives you a tool to evoke happy, positive thoughts basically which should become habit IYSWIM.

PC, bear in mind dh knows nothing about it of course but this is the therapy dh thinks will work for me.

I'm not sure about for good - think that maybe more on the lines of CBT - but it gives you a tool to empower positive thinking which can then in turn empower you to be in a stronger mental position for almost every area of life.

It's often used at sales seminars etc to imbibe sales reps with that 'can do' attitude.

As I say its all about association. The easiest way to explain it is like this:

Say you get a new car or a pram or a coat or whatever...suddenly it seems that you see that car/pram/coat everywhere you go. This is because you are now subconscious associated with that car or whatever and so your subconscious brain automatically notices it where it wouldnt have before.

It's about tuning your brain into the kind of thinking you want to be having ie positive as opposed to negative and so that is why you 'anchor' good memories or even good thoughts about things that havent happened (but you'd like to) so you can use then to overwrite bad feelings.

I'm waffling but I hope you get the drift!!
