He's going to see the GP tomorrow, and at this point, I'm assuming it's a hernia.

If it is, what's the treatment?

TIA

I dont know - but hope he is ok
bumping for you

Is the lump soft and squidgy?

If so, probably a hernia,in which case a minor op will sort it.

If harder, probably a lymph node, in which case it will probably disappear in a week or two

My DS was born with double inguinal hernia. He had an op to correct it when he was 2. This involved making a couple of slits and pushing the tissue back into the abdomen, and then putting a stitch in each side of the scrotum to anchor the testes.

It was day surgery - arrived around 8am and left around 4pm. The op was less than an hour, and the rest of the day was spent sleeping.

Thanks.

He won't let us touch it, as it hurts, but he says it's hard (like a magnetix ball) so I guess it could be a lymph node then?

hmm, could be a lymph node, but hernias can become incarcerated. Does he have any cuts/ sores/ infected bites on that leg?

If a hernia becomes incarcerated it means that whatever is in the hernia has got stuck. If it is just fatty tissue, it can be sore without being harmful, but if it is bowel, then that needs attention, quickly.

Is he being sick, does he have tummy ache? If yes to either of those, take him to A+E. Ask if his testicle on that side hurts- if so, take him to A+E.

EmmaJW1976 · 19/11/2007 21:47

that doesn't sound like a hernia. My son has had an inguinal hernia and it was nothing like that

Sounds like a lymph node, has he had an infection recently? They can be tender, especially if he keeps poking it

tissy · 19/11/2007 21:47

If it's about the same size as a Magnetix ball, then almost certainly a lymph node. hernias tend to be bigger.

EmmaJW1976 · 19/11/2007 21:49

Yes tissy, my son's testicle was like a space hopper .........maybe a slight exaggeration but you get my drift!!

unknownrebelbang · 19/11/2007 21:53

Size I would say is slightly bigger than a magnetix ball to look at.

He has an infection at the moment on his thigh - same leg. It was a weeping sore a big red patch underneath the skin. That's drying out now following a course of antibiotics.

The lump appeared Saturday morning when he woke up (on camp). He's not been prodding it too much because it hurts when he touches it.

He's not being sick or got a poorly tummy, and his testicles are fine, I did ask him about that earlier on.

ukrb i have just looked at your profile to see son's age. do you really like simply red? please tell me it is post-modern irony.

anyway ds had an inguinal hernia, found it at 7m. dp had strangulated one at about 18m so we had been primed by gps on what to look for (horrid doctor held him upside down and said that should shake it out). it is an operation but it is short and small and so is the recovery.

unknownrebelbang · 19/11/2007 21:59

rofl fishie. No, seriously, I used to love Simply Red, and even now when I hear Mr Hucknall sing...

I do, however, have a much MUCH wider taste in music than my profile indicates, lol.

It is a swollen gland, linked to the infection.

More antibiotics for the infection, and it should disappear soon after the infection has cleared up.

Thanks for the posts last night.

unknownrebelbang · 21/11/2007 22:36

I fear the need to change my profile...
