14 year old with 4 premolars removed - how long to recover?

My 14 year old dd had her 4 premolar teeth removed under local anaesthetic this morning. She has two weeks of exams starting on Monday and I'm starting to panic that perhaps it wasn't the best timing! Has anyone any experience of how she will be feeling by Monday please? I've given her paracetomol and ibuprofen. There's still quite a lot of blood, despite biting down on rolled up hankerchief! Thanks in advance.

She'll be fine most likely - I had 4 premolars removed in one go at the same age, I was back at school the next day. A bit tender but nothing that a couple of paracetamol wouldn't cure.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed as an adult, I was off work the next day but honestly could have gone in, it was just that the dentist said not to due to the sedation.

Disclaimer: if she gets dry socket (and please God she doesn't) you'll need to take her to A&E for morphine, apparently it's worse than childbirth.

Findahouse21 · 04/06/2021 21:15

I had mine done and was fine the following day

PixieDust28 · 04/06/2021 21:20

You won't have to take her to A&E for a dry socket 🤦🏻‍♀️ and you won't need morphine. You can be treated in a dental chair for dry socket. I'm a dental nurse and we've treated many.
Just phone 111 or go to a walk in dental clinic over the weekend if that was the case but I'm sure she'll be fine.

She should be fine, just a bit tender but that won't last for long. She will be a bit sore tonight as there has been tugging and pulling. Keep the area nice and clean and no hard foods. Nice soft foods for a couple of days and lots of water.

My DD was in a bit of pain the day after having teeth removed (2 lots of 2 prior to a fixed brace) but painkillers helped. I think she'll be fine by Monday and probably by Sunday OP. Soft food would be a bonus if she's had extractions on both sides at once - DD had a tooth removed top and bottom on one side, then the other side a couple of weeks later so had one side available to eat on.

Hope she's OK OP Flowers

We have one under general coming up (getting ready for braces too) and wondering the same. Soft foods for how long?

13lucky · 04/06/2021 22:04

Thank you so much for your replies. Please could someone (PixieDust28 maybe) explain what dry socket is, how to prevent it and how I would know if she had it? I've been dosing her up on paracetomol and ibuprofen all day and will continue with that tomorrow depending on how she is. Just hoping she can squeeze some revision in over the weekend!!!

Dry socket happens when the clot of blood is lost. So no harsh spitting, no straws for drinking, gentle swishes of salt water etc. You'd know if she had it because pain would be getting worse not better

TropicalFairyCake · 04/06/2021 22:15

I hope she feels better soon x

Did they recommend salt water mouth washing? I’ve had a bit of dental surgery and salt water rinsing really helped healing.

13lucky · 04/06/2021 22:40

The sheet of paper with info on that they gave me said not to rinse with salt water until 24 hours later...so we'll try that tomorrow morning. Thank you all. She was so brave! I almost threw up my breakfast sitting and watching...I had tears in my eyes on her behalf.

@13luckyi know this is old but I wondered why they needed all 4 premolar removed? Do they now have less adult teeth? Thankyou
