Sudden stomach issues/nausea –any ideas?

I’ve had an iron constitution for almost 50 years – no food allergies/intolerances – but four times in almost as many weeks I’ve had extreme nausea/vomiting straight after eating, and can’t pinpoint the reason.

First time, had baked potatoes and salad for dinner, within an hour I started to feel nausea and ended up vomiting 8 times that evening/into the night. DP ate the same and was fine – I just put it down to my bit of salad being dodgy!

Second time, had some salad leaves which did taste odd and more bitter than usual. I stopped eating after a few, but was very nauseous soon after–again, was just putting that down to bad salad, even though nothing like this has ever happened before.

Third time, I stupidly ate a rice-filled wrap my DD made in school home ec, the day after she brought it home. It hadn’t been in a fridge. I know this was 99% my fault and that rice is a known harbour of food poisoning! But honestly, I’ve been eating stuff like this all my life and never had a problem. So why now?

However, last night was strangest of all. I made veggie enchiladas from scratch. Fully cooked veg inside, served piping hot, with steamed asparagus, also piping hot. DP ate exactly the same. Again, within an hour I was extremely nauseous, had to lie down and fell asleep almost straight away, but was back up during the night with my stomach feeling awful, almost but not quite being sick (I could easily have been if I'd tried, but I tend towards trying to stave off vomiting rather than encouraging it IYSWIM (probably not the right tactic!).

Anyone got any thoughts? I’m kind of worried about when this will happen next! PS DEF not pg!

Hi OP!

You are not alone! I have attacks exactly like this. In one way I'm lucky, I have IBD too so I have a direct line to the gastro team. Anyway, each time I have had an abdo x-ray and it always shows I'm backed up. I don't feel constipated, I 'go' daily, but the proof is there in black and white! I take laxido sachets (not sure if you can get them OTC but I think you can get Movicol). 6 in 6 hours usually does the trick. I also have two a day now as prescribed by my doctor as it's ongoing.

Not advising self-medicating, but it is a classic sign of constipation, so perhaps ask your GP for an abdominal x-ray referral? Or just go ahead and try thr gentle laxatives. I also have mild gastroparesis, which can make it worse.

Always worth getting checked, but try not to worry

I would say gallstones, they don’t always present with classic nasty pain. I’ve had similar and diagnosed with stones when having a scan for unrelated matter. Still I don’t think they do anything surgical, they advise low fat diet but I’m on a permanent one already!

See your GP, could be some kind of inflammation and needs checking out ASAP

Thanks all, these are interesting takes. I am leaning towards gallstones after reading up about them - although this nausea hasn't been accompanied by the characteristic sharp pain, I do actually get this at widely spaced intervals - just one breathtaking pain of a second or so, then it goes away, but it's in the right area. And oh dear, I do eat a pretty high fat diet too because I've always thought it's good for the brain! Am normal weight and fit. Will get it checked out - thanks.
