Deep cut on hand from glass shattering do I need to get checked?

Opened cupboard this morning glass fell as I grabbed it it’s hit the cupboard and smashed in my hand. It was bleeding heavy for about 3 mins but was very open and fleshy. I’ve washed and dried it it’s not painful to touch but the surrounding area is so sore and hurting when I move my little finger. Would I be able to tell if glass has embedded in there? Unsure if I need to see a doctor or not.... have a young baby so don’t want to have to go somewhere like out of hours unless necessary. It wasn’t hurting at first the pain come around 30 mins later... it’s closed up more since this photo but just very painful Sad

For me I'd want to get that checked at minor injuries.

You can't be sure there's nothing still in the wound and it might benefit from either a steri-strip or a stitch to close it.

@isettled yeah I might have to go to a&e there are no minor injury units near me nearest one is an hours drive ahhh!.

Yes, it's a pain in the arse but I'd want to be sure there was no glass left in there.

I would give 111 a ring. Round us some doctors surgeries will check that type of injury and can do simple stitching.

From NHS website:

When to get medical help

Call NHS 111 or visit your local walk-in centre, minor injuries unit or GP surgery if there's a risk your wound could become infected, or you think it's already infected.

A wound is at risk of infection if:
...
there was something in the wound before it was cleaned, such as gravel or a shard of glass
it has a jagged edge
it's longer than 5cm (2 inches)
...

Go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department as soon as possible if:
...
there's a possibility a foreign body is still inside the wound

So if there was a shard of glass in that cut, or you think there could still be one, then yes. Speaking as a normal human being I'd say it's pretty marginal either way!

Personally,I wouldn't go to the out of hours for that. You've washed it well and it's stopped bleeding. Of course it hurts - and it will do so for a few days. It's a deep cut and there'll be some bruising around as a result.

I would be popping to my local pharmacy to buy some steri strips as they will help to keep the small gash closed and possibly cover with a light bandage/plaster as well.

I'd only go to get additional help if it started to look infected - ie very red and inflamed, warm to the touch etc or if it kept continuing to bleed.

Yes - I would go to a&e. Sometime x ray can see if any glass deep inside. Also, they can give u some local anaesthetic and prod round and clean it a bit more

Triffid1 · 01/06/2021 14:44

Oh, and I'm assuming you've applied some antiseptic cream too. To help ensure you keep infection at bay.

isettled · 01/06/2021 14:57

@S1987x ah that's unfortunate. If definitely got to a&e. Better to be safe than sorry, at the very least they'll give it a good clean and Check for debris.

S1987x · 01/06/2021 17:00

Thanks everyone quite worried now as doctor told me there is nothing they can do without cutting it back open so to just keep it dry, clean and aired and wait and see how it heals and keep a close eye on it. It’s painful still but if it gets worse within the next few days I need to go back Sad

Tbh that's what I'd do. I had a larger one also caused by glass that wouldn't stop bleeding after 20 mins and for that I was told to come in and get it glued. But for something that stopped bleeding in 3 minutes and doesn't have anything obviously in it I'd do as above.

MsMarch · 01/06/2021 18:08

Of COURSE it's painful. You have a bloody deep cut on your hand. But it's not bleeding any more and if you keep it clean and dry and protected with appropriate plasters, it will most likely be fine.
