Impacted wisdom tooth coming out on Weds. How much is it going to hurt?

I am having my lower right wisdom tooth out this week. Its impacted and twisted, hasn't hurt for a few months but when it does its agony.

How much will it hurt, will i be drugged up for a few days? When i am likely to be able to eat again. I love my food and am dreading having to eat soup. I'm going to be a right old grumpy cow for a few days I think .

Won't hurt as much as giving birth!!

figleaf · 21/11/2007 18:50

I think the scare stories here are the oddities, most wisdom teeth come out in a lot less dramatic way. The reoccuring pain of the tooth is FAR worse than an extraction and a small amount of pain afterwards. Take the pills - be happy! N.B I wouldn't rate my wisdom tooth extractions as even on the same scale as labour. Labour is horrific compared to wisdom tooth extraction.

LadyTopHat - I had both top and bottom out last time and need another top one out next month.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 18:52

a whole lot less than it does now!

i had one impacted one, on top, and had it out as an outpatient when i went to the oral surgeon consult.

was FINE!

no need for lots of drugs or not eating for days.

only spent a day on smoothies.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 18:52

oh, nowhere near labour pain. no way! not anywhere even close!

CarGirl · 21/11/2007 18:55

dh was really not good after his were taken out (2 at a time first one side then the other) the time he tooks lots of arnica starting a few days beforehand there was far less bruising even though that was the most impacted and infected tooth. He loves his food and was VERY grumpy for a few days until he could eat again. He also took all pain relief possible round the clock for several days.

figleaf · 21/11/2007 18:56

Just noticed the date - did you have it done Meglet? If so how did it go?

Wotzupnow · 21/11/2007 18:57

All 4 out in one go. Done in hospital, while I was under. Afterwards it hurt and my neck ached for a few days. I took painkillers. No problems since. Good luck.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 18:58

i had this lovely out of hours doctor here the other night, and needed two big jabs, and he even said that most men are big jessies when it comes to pain.

just take the meds and say goodbye to agonising tooth pain.

Wotzupnow · 21/11/2007 19:00

Is it an urban myth that men can cope with stronger but shorter bursts of pain and woman can endure longer periods of intense pain?

MillieMummy · 21/11/2007 19:07

Sorry to say that I had two out recently (one wisdom and one molar) and it was terrible. Was knocked out but I was shocked at how painful it was afterwards, I was on pain killers 'round the clock for 5 days after. I wish I had been warned because was expecting to be back at work two days later and had to have the rest of the week off. Meglet, I hope you don't have the problems I did, but I would rather be prepared. Make sure you have a good supply of pain killers in .....

Wotzupnow · 21/11/2007 19:12

After reading Millie's posy I've thought again about this and actually mine hurt like hell TBH! I came around in was shocked by the pain. Sorry. Infact I would probably rather give birth again its more rewarding.

meglet · 21/11/2007 19:17

hello figleaf and everyone! I am sitting here with a swollen jaw, drugged up to the eyeballs on codeine . Tooth is out, but it was not much fun. TBH my emergency c-section was much more pleasant. It feels like I have really bad tonsillitis. Am going to try some mash potato in a mo, I don't want to take painkillers on an empty stomach.

If anymore come out I am insisting on a general anaesthetic!

ahhh - poor you meglet

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 21/11/2007 20:05

I had 4 out (2 out per appointment). Local anaesthetic was adequate, lots of tugging but no pain. Afterwards I had a dull ache, I don't think I was prescribed any painkillers.

There is a lot of blood & spit to be got rid of for up to an hour afterwards - an old baby muslin would be good for spitting into! I didn't have adequate tissues and went home looking like an extra from the Hammer Horror films.

And no smoking and no hot drinks for a few hours afterwards, if I remember correctly.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 21/11/2007 20:07

Oh meglet, you've been! Well done, at least it's over and once healed, no more impacted tooth pain.

Well done! Hope you enjoyed your mash.

figleaf · 22/11/2007 08:29

Hope you're feeling better today

meglet · 22/11/2007 09:06

Good morning! thanks for your messages of support. I am feeling much perkier today . Mind you, my jaw is so swollen I'm not keen on leaving the house. I hope it rains so I can put my hood up later! Haven't eaten anything else but will try soup later. Rather suprised at the lack of pain, the tooth had been sqashing a nerve so now the pressure is off it feels better.

Glad you're feeling OK.

If you think you've a swollen jaw, you should see what happened to some of my friends who took the wussy route of having a GA. Dentists clearly use much more brute force when the patient is not observing them!
