i know this is a bit of a silly request, given that not many of you will be doctors, but please help me figure out what's going on with very unhappy 4mo

has been crying a lot for the last 48hrs

sounds hoarse (due to crying?? sore throat?)

upset at feeds - pulls away from breast crying (but is ok for the first part of the feed)

pooing more than normal - quite thin (the poo, not ds2)

crying even after doses of calpol and nurofen

hard to comfort

teeth?

ds1 only cut his first at 9mo, so wasn't really expecting any just yet...

ds2 4mo today (did i already say that?) [exhausted]

DD cut her first tooth at 4 mo, so teeth not out of the question....

NomDePlume · 18/11/2007 18:06

I found DD's poo was quite 'gritty' when she was teething

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 18/11/2007 18:06

dd3 first one came through at 2-3months.

LaylaandSethsmum · 18/11/2007 18:06

Has he had jabs recently? they can put them out of sorts for a bit.

lulumama · 18/11/2007 18:08

he could be poorly

swallowing might be hurting his throat hence being upset at feeds?

might be sickening for something, hence upset and dicky tummy

poor little thing

is he feverish?

Hekete · 18/11/2007 18:13

Teeth, tummy ache, trapped wind, overtired, sore throat, misc virus....

List is endless.

This age is so frustrating when you just can't figure out what's wrong. Sympathies.

Since you mention change in poo, I'd think maybe tummy pain. Bug maybe, perhaps also trapped wind? Have you tried that stuff that is supposed to help with trapped wind? gripe water, infacol etc?

Given warm bath?

Tummy massage?

Give painkillers, try to make sure he's as comfy as poss. That's all you can do. If you feel he's getting worse, have a doctor take a look.

NomDePlume · 18/11/2007 18:15

Infacol was a godsend for DD

mintydixcharrington · 18/11/2007 18:17

Bet you a lot of money he has an ear infection. Unlikely to be teeth this early, esp if no 1 had latish dentition.
calpol and nurofen hardly make a dent in ear pain. poor thing
I'd take him to the docs tomorrow and get them to look in his ears, if it is v bad they may put him on antibiotics (esp because of his age) and if so that should kick in quickly to relieve the pain

Keep up the calpol (I'd be cautious of nurofen, it is horribly tough on little stomachs, I won't use it any more, may in fact be giving him stomach aches) and prepare for a long night. Poor you!

Tutter · 18/11/2007 19:45

thanks all

he's asleep now

if still poorly tomorrow i'll take him to the docs to check his ears

no temperature yesterday, will check again in the morning (hehe, you can tell he's not my first, i'd have been checking his temp hourly)

LadyTophamHatt · 18/11/2007 19:51

ds4 had all those symptons last week, was snotty and coughing and his temp kept shooting up.

Minty is right.

It was an ear infection.

(he has got 4 teeth coming through too though. 2 still coming, 2 have appeared now)

LadyTophamHatt · 18/11/2007 19:52

Ds4s temp was fine when the symptons were as you listed, then on about the 3rd day on them it started to rocket.

beowulf · 18/11/2007 20:23

Tutter - my 3mo has been exactly the same since Thursday evening. I took him to the out of hours GP today after several rubbish feeds and dryish nappies and he said it was a "touch of colic" which I translate to mean "go away you neurotic woman, he looks fine to me".

He didn't even look at DS2's ears. DS2 is still miserable, so if this carries on I'll take him to the proper GP next week.

LadyTophamHatt · 19/11/2007 09:14

how is he this morning Tutter?

mintydixcharrington · 19/11/2007 09:27

hope he is feeling a little better this morning tutt

Tutter · 19/11/2007 11:25

he had a pretty good night, thanks - woke at 4am but settled after a good jig around the bedroom (only 30 mins out of bed - a good night for me)

took him to the gp anyway. one ear apparently red, but no temp and not too upset so far today, so holding off on a/bs - will stick with calpol unless he gets worse again

thanks xx

oh good. hopefully he is fighting it off by himself

mine NEVER had fever with ear infections btw, can be a bit of a red herring looking for one
