Iron tablets

Started on them due to low haemoglobin, dose is one three times a day

From past experience I know I’ll struggle with this so initially started on one a day for two days consecutively and on third day took one morning and one evening

Always with food

This week I’ve tried taking one on one day and then one morning and evening the next day

This afternoon mid shift at work I just felt off and then have had diarrhoea

I’m thinking it’s the iron tablets but don’t really know what to do now going forward. I’ll have a break until tomorrow of taking them anyway but I really do need them as haemoglobin quite low and been told will need them for at least three months before haemoglobin will be re checked

Thanks for any advice

there's some evidence that once a day/ every other day gives as good results but with fewer side effects. Whoever prescribed the tablets is probably aware of that and has chosen that frequency for a reason, but if you don't get on with it it's probably worth asking about reducing the frequency longer term. Also, some people get on better with different iron salts, so it may be worth asking about swapping if whichever you're on doesn't agree with you.

hi,
my son is 15 and a member of basketball team in school. Lately he finds himself getting too tired for training. He eats well and sleeps well. please advise if I should get him some iron syrup or tablets.

Hiya, I started ferrous sulphate about three weeks ago for mildly low haemoglobin (112) and practically non-existent ferritin (

@outdoorballpro I would be very careful about self-diagnosis, only there is such a thing as iron overload and therefore you should go to the doctor. With teenage girls you might be able to self diagnose because of menstruation, but with a boy I definitely wouldn't give extra iron unless directed to by a doctor. Iron is toxic.

The most current evidence is that one tablet alternate days works better than multiple tablets daily.

More iron is absorbed with fewer side effects.

I’d try to persist. As a previous poster said, the diarrhoea cab settle after a week or so

Get some iron tablets. Basketball is a tough sport to play.

I have very low ferritin levels. I also have IBS and have been really struggling to raise my levels as the tablets wreck my stomach. I’ve recently purchased ferrous bisglycinate, it’s supposed to be much kinder on the digestive system.

I take feroglobin liquid as I'm anaemic due to bowel resection. I take double dose and my iron is spot on. My belly can't handle the tablets at all.

If you think your son might be low on iron, they could try Spatone which is very gentle and unlikely to do any harm.

But I agree with the pp who said it's much less likely for a boy and it might be better to investigate.
