Blood tests query - surely there are optimal numbers for heamatocrit and haemoglobin levels??

I've had some blood tests done and both heamatocrit and haemoglobin came back bang on the normal/below normal cut off. GP is adamant that those levels are fine and that they don't in themselves explain my fatigue issue. In the past when my ferritin has been low normal I know that it makes me feel rubbish, I seem to suit a higher level. Could this not be the case with these 2 results too? If so, how does one improve the numbers since clearly taking an iron supplement doesn't do it since I've been on one for the last 2 years and my heamatocrit and haemoglobin numbers have barely changed Confused

What were the results ?

In my experience GPs pass results that are borderline high/low. Have you been taking prescription iron or supplements you can buy, as these aren’t strong enough. Can you see another doctor or even pay for a consultation?

Thanks for replies. My haemoglobin was 120 (range 120 -150) and haematocrit was 0.374 (range 0.37 - 0.45.) 18 months ago my haemoglobin was 118 so below the cut off, and apparently that was fine too, I wasnt prescribed iron and have been buying my own since then. I take a 34mg iron supplement advertised as high strength (made by Oxford Vitality.) GP said something like so long as my ferritin is ok then not to worry (altho she hadn't asked for my ferritin to be checked!)

120 is fine really.
Perhaps go back to your GP if you feel rubbish as it really isn't your iron .
Could be something else so worth going for a full check up .

Did you get thyroid function tests?

Was your vitaming D checked?
Everyone should take a supplement throughout the winter. The advice was to take it throughout lockdown. So if you didn't, the likelyhood is that your level is low.
Low vitamin D makes you feel awful.
The current sunny weather will help a bit, but most people use sunscreen, which is good, but reduces your ability to make vit D.

Those results are fine. Get your b12 checked.
