Anyone's DC had a reaction to the first round of DTP jabs, but been ok for the 2nd lot? Or not??

DD2 had no reaction to 1st DTP jab. (She started them late as I was waiting for the new type.) After the 2nd injection she had a small (10p sized) red reaction at the site. After the 3rd she had a large (covering half her upper leg) reaction, not at the injection site, but where the vaccine had gone in IFYSWIM. The lump was hot, red, swollen and hard to the touch. (In herself she was fine.)

I looked it up on the official vaccine website, and it described it as a severe local reaction, and said that it should be reported, and anyone having it should not be given the same vaccine again.

I went back to my gp's surgery, but they said that it wouldn't mean that she couldn't have the vaccine again. I have also spoken to a couple of other parents who say their childern had a similar reaction

I'm being asked to bring her in for her booster now. I really want her to have this, but am a bit concerned by the increasing reaction she had last time. What if the next one is even worse? Has anyone had experience of this and have they had any problems with the booster jabs? Thanks for reading

If the official site says no then listen to them. drug companies want you to have vaccines so they aren't going to say 'don't' unless its for real.
GP's know bugger all about vaccine reactions and I've seen too many kids with brain damage from vaccines (although your child is more likely to have anyphalactic shock).
There's no scientific evidence that boosters are necassary. Pertussis shouldn't be given after 5 as its more risky as the child gets older, diptheria just isn't common and the tetanus jabs your dd has already had should protect her if she gets a deep, dirty tetanus type wound plus you can always have a jab at the hozzie if that happens.
Did the GP fill in an adverse reaction form? you really have to push them for this.

My DS has a reaction like your DD second reaction a smallish 10p sized hard lump on his leg for each of his first three injections but it didn't get any bigger with successive injections and he had no reaction at all with his recent booster other than the aching arm that you get with tetnus.

I would check with the nurse or HV before they do the injection but I wouldn't think she would necessarily have the same reaction this time that she had last time. However, that is only based on my DS2 and not on any medical evidence. A sample of one is not necessarily very conclusive!

Thanks Niecie and needmorecoffee. I feel that I would like to give her the booster if possible, even though I know that it may not be strictly necessary. I put off getting the MMR but was then racked with guilt and worry in case she caught measles, so I know that for me I come down marginally on the pro vaccine side, although I understand and sympathise with those who are more anti it.

I too, was not convinced by the gp's knowledge of the subject, and though I know this is not a proper survey, I'd still be very grateful for any more responses - after all, the experience of the community of Mumsnet is going to be bigger than my gp's experience for a start....

My children have had the single jabs and part of the reason for that was because they reacted to their baby jabs. My son had the school booster jab without the MMR part and had cellulitis.

redadmiral · 18/11/2007 14:03

Hi NAB. So sorry to hear about your son. I don't know much about cellulitis, but my friends DH has it, and it sounds hard to treat.Do you mean that he got cellulitis from the DTP booster jab? And was that after getting a reacton to his infant jabs?

I think my dd had a reaction to the first round of DTP. GP and hospital and consultant all refused to bear me out. Her subsequent apnea episodes were put down to silent reflux and undiagnosed RSV.

I delayed the next round till she was about 9m without any further consequence. She had the final set just before 12m.

She hasn't had anything since and I am now, at 2yrs, in a dilemma over MMR.

Unfortunately funds probably mean she will have MMR but I will continue to delay as long as I can.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 18/11/2007 14:23

IMHO He got cellulitis because the jab wasn't done properly and the hospital agreed.

I debated for ages about MMR for both my children, and then found they had no noticeable side effects afterwards, unlike the DTP, which made DD1 very weird and whingy, and gave DD2 the above reaction. As Niecie says, not a representative sample, just our experience...
