Reduced Levothyroxine and now feel awful - bloods are all normal

Hi Everyone

Would love to have some advice, I have been taken levothyroxine 75mg for underactive thyroid for the past year and Have been told to reduce the levothyroxine to 25mg by the consultant to see if my thyroid will recover (he seems to think it is post-partum related as had a baby at the beginning of last year) Ever since I have been feeling awful, so tired and dizzy with muscle aches,. I have had a few blood tests since reducing the Thyroxine and all bloods are coming back fine.

Doctor (my doctor, The thyroid consultant is saying ‘as long as your thyroid results are coming back fine there is nothing else I can do’) has done blood test for b12 and iron and they are coming back fine.

Has anyone else experienced this when coming of levothyroxine? So fed up of feeling awful!

Thanks

I had the exact same thing many years ago now. I had post partum underactive thyroid, and when my daughter was about a year old, a locum GP advised me to come off the Levothyroxine, as all my bloods were normal. I think after about 3 days, my mood was in my boots, I was exhausted and felt really unwell. I was put back on the meds but only 50mcg. Fast forward a few years, and I fell pregnant. I asked my GP if I needed to increase my meds, he said no. I was sent for an early scan, due the my underactive thyroid, but there was no heartbeat. Apparently I should have at least doubled my meds. I've been on 100mcg for a while now, and I feel fine. But I believe its really common to have the symptoms of an underactive thyroid but your levels appear 'normal'. But the thyroid is a strange beast, and these normal levels might not be normal to everyone. I would ask for your meds to be increased OP, especially with your sympyoms. Flowers

“normal” range for TSH is 0.5-4.5 (from memory) but many people need it to be under 3 to feel normal.

Ask for your actual TSH number

Thanks for your replies, I have spoken to my consultant a few weeks back when my first blood test came back normal and his response was ‘your bloods are fine, how you are feeling maybe physiological’ I can assure you it’s not! So frustrating!

On my last blood test my tsh was 2.7 and T4 is 12.

Post your actual results and the reference levels on healthunlocked.com there are some great admins who can help you and also a wealth of information on hypothyroidism.

For what it's worth, your consultant is a tw*t who has clearly never suffered the symptoms of under active thyroid whilst raising a small child.
