Mouth ulcers - please help

I’ve been suffering from painful mouth ulcers for the best part of nearly 6 months now. After numerous calls/ visits to the GP they have finally referred me to a maxillofacial surgeon as an urgent case.

In the meantime, what can I do to help sooth the pain? The ulcers are on the inside of my lip: they’re swollen, inflamed, red... the pain is horrible and it’s really getting me down.

I’ve tried:

  • Bonjela: find it numbs it for a few minutes then does nothing.
  • Iglu: same as Bonjela
  • Difflam mouthwash: again, helped for a few minutes then just did nothing
  • Steroid mouthwash: might have helped with the inflammation but no instant pain relief.
  • Salt water rinses: stings and feels like it should help but don’t really think it does.

I am in a dire state and feel so miserable. I am glad I’ve been referred (but also a bit scared too), but need a solution that’s going to provide instant pain relief.

Thank you in advance!

There's no evidence to suggest high sugar diet causes mouth ulcers or gluten on its own.
People who have coeliac disease will sometimes get mouth ulcers with gluten but again its important to get an accurate test for coeliac disease so you shouldn't just stop the gluten before bloods

I used to get ulcers all the time - sometimes I'd get HUGE blood blisters, like a slug was on my tongue 😖 then they would burst and leave a huge open crater - horrifically painful.

I haven't had any at all since I started taking a multi-vitamin religiously every day, so I'd definitely try that. The only thing that I found numbed the pain was listerine original throughout the day and smother them with genigel at night. Genigel also do a first aid mouthwash - I haven't used it for ulcers but have found it good for gum inflammation so I guess it would be helpful. It's a really thick liquid that you swill and it coats the soft tissue.

I hope they ease up OP - horrible things, they used to make me feel really unwell Thanks

I used to get lots of ulcers and a really sore tongue i think it was caused by a certain toothpaste. But the best cure by far was gargling with aspirin dissolved in water. Literally within a day or two of doing this 3 times a day I was back to normal.

Are you under stress?

As others have suggested -dissolved aspirin mouth wash/hold in mouth can provide relief so that at least you can eat .

Hope it gets sorted soon ,sounds awful Flowers
