Desperately looking for advice on how to DD following tummy bug. Bug (which we all caught) was 4 days ago - vomiting & diarrhoea. Over now apart from green foul smelling semi-solid poo (!) but has been refusing milk ever since. Dr's advice: she'll eat when she's hungry! Taking small amounts of solids (previously eating like a horse) but no milk & little water. Should I stay off the milk + offer solids & water? Or lay off solids?? Very confused and worried about dehydration so tips gratefully received!

not a scientific answer, but i think i'd try water and rusk / toast / banana etc for solids, and leave whatever is recognisable as 'milk' available should LO decide to point to it

if b/f then i'm not suggesting you walk round with a boob out til she points at it... just offer, at her regular feed times, express if she doesn't want it just then.

we all had a nasty tummy bug a while ago and it took one of my DDs almost 10 days to get her old apetite back so don't worry.

I agree with gigglewitch about foods too offer, and just try to keep her fluid levels up.

It's awful to watch them being listless and not wanting to eat, but she'll get better and put all the weight back on again.

Thanks gigglewitch. She's not pointing yet but her signs of not wanting - batting the bottle away are pretty clear!

I'm combined feeding & she'll happily suck on boob but this only confirms my suspicion that there's not much going on in that department any more only expressing dribbles these days though i'm persisting!...

Thanks forkhandles. It just feels so wrong for her not to drink milk! Do you think i should avoid proper meals for a while & go back to bland solids till her poo returns to normal / she wants her milk again?

NB. does anyone know if milk actually makes bug worse (maybe that's why she has no desire for it?!) or if that's an old wives tale.....

i think babies sort of know what is best for them. and i agree, they do take ages and ages to get over things like tummy bugs.

just go with what she wants to eat and doesn't make her sick again.

when I took my DD to the docs in desperation as she wasn't eating and still being sick every now and again the doc said it's old school to recommend staying away from dairy and these days it's not the advice given. BUT I certainly found that anything like milk or yoghurt used to make her sick until she was really very much better. So I think you are right, she doesn't want it for a reason.

petitfilous · 17/11/2007 21:53

ok, thanks for advice. I'll stop trying to push the milk and hope she wants it again soon!

To echo what others have said, my ds can take quite a while to get his appetite back after being ill, so it may just be that.

I would keep offering her a variety of food you know she likes, and milk too, and when she's ready she'll take what she fancies.

I have noticed too, that when ds finally gets his appetite back, it's back with a veangance and he eats like a horse to make up for lost time!!

Looking for advice. My son is 15 months and only drinks formula. He won't eat solids or drink anything else. We are in food thearpy for it. My question is...he hot a stomach bug last Saturday. It is still going strong. Everytime he drinks a bottle he poops. Today he is barely drinking anything. He is hungry and frustrated. He is changing the position of his neck. I have hone to the dr several times this week. They only want me to bring him in if dehydrated. Any advice appreciated.
