My ds who is 13 nearly 14 Confident child, dare deveil - travelled on a olane alone at the age of 12. Very musical, very busy - and went into a bit of a melt down last week cue to high presure and over load (on another thread) Had a panic attack and now has had a couple more. This one during choir.

I used ot have them very very badly

I need to help him now, he must not go through what I went through.

What can I do?

But glucose sweets only part of whole control of situation thing. Understanding why it happens, knowing you can probably deal with it, remembering all the years when it didn't happen, breathing techniques (only they never seemed to work for him) all helps too. It is so much to do with stress and fear of the next attack, I think. Even a tiny change in the pattern like thinking 'I will drink I will suck this sweet, I will hold out for 5 minutes before I leave the room etc' all help. Poor boys.

ok - that is interesting.

He has sung Eucharist and is fine (afaik) He will be home by 12.30 for lunch so it will be interesting to see how he has done

I think the sweet thing is part distraction and part sorting out the blood sugar levels. Also a technique which MWs use when trying to get women through contractions - if you can do the next five minutes we will review the situation then I found at that age thinking in five minute bursts really helpful as I felt I had control over it.

I had this at primary school - still do on and off.

The key is knowing you've survived a few and been Ok, plus cutting down stress, a little 'mothering' etc.

I had some tablets but it could have been a placebo. I never knew their name.

yes, sweets can help. Something you can have around as a 'back up' so you know there's someting you can do.

Hope he managed alright today

he was brilliant today. at choir from 845 until 12.30 and as far as I am aware nothing. He has to go back to choir at two for a couple of hours - so with luck it will be fine.

Stress is a scary thing specially in kids/teens. I always thought it was something that affected adults and was horrified when my ds showed signs of stress. Didn't have panic attacks, but was definitely 'not himself' and couldn't switch off and relax. Similar to your ds as very bright, high achieving and outwardly confident. This def makes things harder - my ds thought about everything, over-analysed it etc. ds2 is not as bright and creative but will prob have the easier life - feel awful saying that but it's true. ds got through it by lots of time to talk through and listen (really hard i know as you want a quick fix), healthy eating, vitamin supplements and time to chill out. Is everything ok at choir/school? - i discovered with my ds that although on the surface he seemed fine, there were some issues (bored in some lessons and under stimulated - and this was a 'good' school!) and also some friendship issues.

Well he said he was absolutely fine today - I am so relieved.

I know this may not be the end of it but he is a determined and a strong boy and I think he was just exhausted!

Explaining exactly what was happening, helped I think.

I have put in motion some people to talk t incase it rears it's ugly head

And he has a weekend off next week so we are going to go to the beach surfing - HELP!!Ú
