Help - Sterilisation and ablation privately

Hi all,
First of all thanks in advance as Mumsnet has been nothing but a source of help and advice.

A little history. Last year I had a laparoscopy for chronic pelvic pain, long and heavy periods and removal of fimbrial cyst. During the procedure surgeon found multiple small cysts and adhesions and endometriosis and unstuck right ovary from bowel. Thick womb lining was mentioned but told that it's normal after 4 kids and all vaginal deliveries. I had a copper coil at the time and was advised to change to Mirena or implant. I asked for tubes to be tied but my stupid insurance don't cover sterilisation and u know NHS and Corona, I cud never even get on the list of going NHS.

Due to Corona and massive waiting lists at female health clinics I cudnt change the contraception. Additionally I am having epic amounts of vaginal discharge. No infection just because I have a foreign object in there, a coil.

Presently, I am having exact same symptoms again and much longer and heavier periods with spotting a week before actual period. My iron, b12 are rock bottom and cuz of periods I can't keep them at healthy level.

Now I am sure I will be pushed Mirena again. And I hate hormones. I am 40 and for good 20 years I had constant battles with them and me failing to cope and ended up having two more kids than planned cuz I cudnt cope with contraception.

I have an appointment on Wednesday and thinking of asking for endometrial ablation, again done privately. But what to do about contraception after that? NHS usually do ablation and tubes tied at same time but I can't get NHS referral thru gp.

Wud I have to pay separately? Is Sterilisation a part of ablation process? Anyway I can be sterilised privately along with having ablation? Anyone who have health insurance know what can I do?

Thanks for reading, sorry it got longer than planned.

My info is old, but I doubt there's an insurer who will pay for tubal ligation alongside an ablation, as it's contraception. You could ask the consultant and private hospital if they'll do the ablation under the insurance and you'll pay the difference. for the tubal ligation You will be in hospital the same amount of time as just the ablation, so it will be just surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre time

I had ablation privately. Whilst I was under my surgeon offered to also do a sterilisation for free, I just needed to pay for the clips. However she never invoiced me for the clips so I ended up with it for free. Worth asking if they will do it whilst they are in there it's literally an extra 5 min job she said. Surgeon keen that I had a robust contraception as pregnancy once ablated is not good

Thanks ladies,

My surgeon refused to do it during laparoscopy so I doubt she wud agree this time around. Let's see may be I will try a different surgeon.

Last time surgeon said she wud remove tube if another paratubal cyst occur as ovarian cancer starts from tubes.

Let's see what scans say.
Good for you @CatherineCawood

I hope both of u had good experiences of the ablation. I am so frustrated with being ill that I want only positive stories.

Yes good experience. Periods have returned but are very light. I recommend ablation.

I wasn't offered the tube tying when my ablation was done on the NHS. I would have taken it. But, yes, ablation was a massive success for me. I was housebound for 48 hours a month. Haven't had a period since and I'm probably menopausal now so that's me done :)

If you want to do private sterilisation just ring up any gynaecologist, make an appt and pay for it surely?

@CatherineCawood

Hi, I know it's been ages since last post. But I can't find any info about the pricing of private tubal ligation during ablation procedure.

You said u that u were to pay for tubal ligation while under anesthesia for ablation, do you remember the price?

I am going to have ablation in about 2 weeks and I was about to contact consultant secretary for pricing. I was stupidly quite Infront of the consultant when he suggested that condoms would be fine after ablation.

Hi, I was told that I had to pay for the clips which I believe were going to be circa like £40 or something, but like I say never received the invoice form the hospital! I imagine somewhere along the line the consultant forgot to tell the hospital that she used them or something!

My consultant was fine to do the procedure whilst I was under she said it was literally an extra couple of minutes more work. As I was already paying (or the insurance company were) for the theatre, consultant, staff, anesthetic etc she just wanted paying for the clips as the hospital would charge her for whatever equipment she used.

Hope that helps.

@CatherineCawood
It does help. Thanks a million. If it's 40£ I can have 2 clips on each tube!!!
