OK, my nearly 1 yo son has sickness and diarrhoea, and a very rosy face. What's wrong with him??

When he woke up this morning he'd been sick in his cot. I cleaned him up and gave him his morning milk ,which he threw up too. I left him half an hour, then gave him some porridge for breakfast, which he ate and has kept down.

He had one very red cheek first thing this morning, he's just woken up from a nap and now his other cheek and tip of his nose is red too. It doesn't look like a rash, more just a very rosy face.

He's just done his first diarrhoea poo.

His temp is normal, and he seems a bit quiet but generally ok, not grizzly or clingy.

When he cries his voice sounds a bit croaky like he has a sore throat.

I've looked up slapped cheek virus but the sickness and diarrohea don't seem to fit.

Any ideas?

it might just be teething hope soo as its awfull when your bay is ill!

Nbg · 17/11/2007 11:46

Sounds like Teeth.

My ds did this last week.
One morning I woke up to diorreah everywhere and the next it was vomit.

Jojay · 17/11/2007 11:50

He's got several teeth now and hasn't reacted like this before, but I guess it might be.

Just when you think you have them sussed they go and change the rules!!

Sounds like when DS was teething, except he wasn't sick but he did have a rosy face and diarrhoea.

CrushWithEyeliner · 17/11/2007 11:51

could be teeth - or the start of a virus tbh. Watch the temp closely...

katybump · 17/11/2007 12:07

slapped cheek syndrome?

dd666 · 17/11/2007 12:29

dd didnt react with her teeth was just miserable now shes cutting back teeth she has sickness diarrhoea red cheeks nappy rash clingyier (if thats a word )
give him your normal teething stuff see if it helps

Jojay · 17/11/2007 15:40

I offered him some lunch at about 12.30 and he wasn't interested, so i left it and tried agauin at aobut 2.30. He ate quite a bit but has just thrown the whole lot up

I'm starting to think he may have a sickness bug and be teething - poor little angel

On the plus side though, his temp is still ok and he's drinking lots of water, so I'm sure he'll be ok soon.

how is he jojay? any better x

Jojay · 17/11/2007 20:27

Thanks for asking Katy - no, he's not much better.

He can't keep anything down now, not even water so I don't think it's just teething.

Saying that, the redness in the face is subsiding but I think that was just a red herring......

He;s in bed now. I'll see how he goes through the night and tomorrow morning, and if he still can't keep anything down at all, I'll probably take him to the doctor.

Despite all this he still seems quite cheerful in himself, when he's not puking, and was merrily 'dancing' along to the X factor, so I don't think he's on death's door just yet!!

keep us posted and i hope he's beter soon x

Elibean · 18/11/2007 15:42

How's he doing, JoJay? My 11 mo old dd is the same - though not rosy, very pale. Cough, sickness, diarrhoea - can't keep water down. I've called the out of hours doc, because I'm worried she'll dehydrate...

TLSM · 18/11/2007 15:44

there is also something going a round as my little man is the same but he is 3 1/2 so not teething!

Elibean · 18/11/2007 15:48

Defo not teething here either - she's always teething, this is a BUG.

Hope your ds is better soon!

CrushWithEyeliner · 18/11/2007 16:32

sorry to hear your LO still ill Eli - my DD is recovering after this but she also had an ear infection.
Good luck with it - how much fluid is she keeping in?

xx

Elibean · 18/11/2007 17:43

Thanks, Crush. She had another nap, then looked pinker and has kept 100mls of water down over the last hour - with only one bout of squits and no vomitting. Am now in two minds about dragging her out in the freezing cold to late apt at hospital....

CrushWithEyeliner · 18/11/2007 18:41

I agree that makes things 10x worse. I did that when DD hurt her leg in the high chair 2m ago, I paniced and drove her in the freezing night air to A&E and it just messed her up, she got a cold and has been ill since actually...

Elibean · 18/11/2007 19:03

I hope I don't detect signs of tired Mummy giving herself a hard time here

We didn't go. She has thrown up again, but probably only because we gave in to her loud requests for some bread and a bit of fish finger

Doubt she'll sleep long, with only water inside her, but at least she's not dehydrating.

I'm so glad your dd is on the mend, and am going to ask GP to look at ears and chest tomorrow just in case its not all tummy!

Jojay · 19/11/2007 14:10

Well my little man isn't right either, and I was puking all last night too!!

Ds managed to projectile vomit dowm MIL's french doors and curtains yesterday, and our house is starting to resemble a chinese laundry!!

We're off to the doc's now as he hasn't really kept anything in for more than 48 hrs now - the sickness is easing off but the diarrhoea is horrendous!

Ill let you know what the Doc says.

I think it's a virus though, as I went into work this morning and loads of my colleagues had had it over the weekend too - NICE!!!

Do let us know, Jojay...I agree, 'tis a virus. Our GP said, this morning, to keep giving Diarolyte sachets in water after every vomit (diarrhoea was foul yesterday, but none now - nothing to poo, poor love) and to take to A&E if it gets worse

I wish I knew how long it was going to last, its been about 28 hours now.

Hope your ds is better soon!

Elibean · 19/11/2007 14:26

And you, too, of course!

Jojay · 19/11/2007 14:54

Well we've been to the Doctors and he said there wasn't much that they can do, but to keep trying to get fluids into him.

He said if he was still vomiting, to give him 2 teaspoons full of water every 5 mins or so - easier said than done but I can see why that would work - hopefully such a small amount of water at a time won't make them sick.

He said to bring him back if he seems lethargic or floppy, or dry in the mouth (DS's lips were dry but not in his mouth)

Otherwise just cary on getting fluid into him.

He said he's seen a lot of this lately, the sickness tends to last a day or two, then the diarrhoea can last for a week -GREAT!!

Hope all your sicky babies are on the mend!!

OP posts:
Elibean · 19/11/2007 15:22

Ah, poor love. dd is definitely lethargic, but who wouldn't be after vomiting for two days and having diarrhoea at the same time?

Jojay · 19/11/2007 16:29

Ahhh, poor girl. I'm sure she'll feel better soon, esp. when the Diarolyte kick in.

DS is as happy as a larry and full of beans, though probably taking longer than normal naps, so I don't think there's too much wrong!

I've managed to get a fair bit of fluid into him this afternoon - I put a tiny splash of squash in his water and he thinks it's yum!!

Jojay · 21/11/2007 18:56

Hi Elibean - how's your DD??

My Ds is still not right - it's been 5 days now

He was sick at the childminders today, and had awful diarrhoea so I collected him early. He's got hardly any appetite, though will eat some breakfast but not much else.

I bougth some diarolyte today too and he's drunk a fair bit so that might help.

My childminder has recommended Kaolin fro tummy troubles too, saying it always helps her DD, so we might give that a try tomorrow.

Hope your DD is feeling better
