Chalazion

Can they last for years? Or never go away? It's over 7 years now and occasionally flares up and changes size / colour.

I normally just live with it although do feel quite self conscious. Last time I went to GP they refused to do anything (wouldn't even refer for private healthcare).

It's really painful again. Eye is weeping and it's the largest it's been. Can now see it out side of eye and just totally fed up with it.

Will contact GP again but not hopeful.

I guess I just want to know if 1/ is it actually a chalazion? 2/ should it have remained for so long without clearing up 3/ can I push GP to get a referral for it to be removed?

DH did have one removed a few years ago and it was nowhere near as bad as mine so frustrating they won't do anything.

An optician can refer to ophthalmology but you'll probably be waiting months.

If you can afford to go private just self refer

I insisted on private referral and paid for it myself (no insurance). Squeaky (lucky) wheel and all that.
Was brilliant. I had been bothered very regularly by it and afterwards nothing. I use daily eye cleaning wipes every morning too to keep any more away.

I had one when I lived in France and saw a specialist (you can go direct over there). After about 4 weeks of antibiotic eye ointment it was gone and I haven't seen it since. My sister had one here on the U.K. and waited before getting help. She eventually got a referral and got the worst of it removed at the hospital but it hasn't gone completely. The specialist she saw recommended a warm eye compress and it has helped keep it at bay.

Mine went away with antibiotic cream and warm compresses. The ophthalmic physician I saw thought I would need to have it removed. We were both surprised how quickly it went.

I have one at the moment, my GP won't do anything with it unless pain or vision issues. I have private healthcare but they won't act unless it is medical grounds.
I hate mine so much.

Thanks everyone. I'll try getting a private referral again and see if I can get it removed that way on my private healthcare. If not I may look to paying for it to be done privately.

I'm not even 100% sure it is that due to the way it flares up but it is now impacting vision even if it calms down again in a few days so hopefully that is a strong enough criteria.
