Did I just do something really stupid?

About 3 weeks ago I got a coil fitted. I was supposed to be getting a copper one but when I got there she had the mirena ready and got all shirty that I wanted a copper one "nobody has a copper one these days you know, I don't even think we have one in the surgery" .

So I went with the mirena, cue two weeks of crap. I have bled really heavily ever since (and given that I am excl bfeding a 12 wk baby I am feeling conned at having to deal with that) and have had a constant low lying headache ever since it was fitted. So I just called up to get it removed and the ever so polite, kind and lovely receptionist said I can't because the gp doesn't have another coil clinic for 6 weeks!!

So I just pulled it out myself.

I am now thinking that given that I know nothing about coil removal or how they do it that I probably shouldn't of. It has also just occured to me that when I go back to get a copper one she is going to wonder where the bloody mirena one is.

I just did something stupid didn't I

Hmm I really crampy now, is this normal after your coil comes out?

tissy · 16/11/2007 12:42

er, yes, but you'll probably be fine!

Did it all come out? Check it's not broken.

Expect crampiness and some withdrawal bleeding for a few days, as Mirena contains hormones.

It's all there

Fio, not sure apparently you have to go to the special 'coil clinic' at a special time on a special day

tissy · 16/11/2007 12:44

actually, if you've been bleeding, you probably won't bleed any more than you already have done!

It would have been more sensible to discuss it with the GP first, rather than pull it out, but I doubt if any harm has been done.

No idea re the bleeding, she told me I should have some 'spotting' for a few days

Plus in DP's words 'god you've been a right mardy cow for the last few weeks whats wrong with you' and he is right too!

I have a copper coil as the Mirena sent me loopy. It is your body and your doctor has a duty of care to listen to you. If you did not want the Mirena then she has no right to force it on to you. I would change doctor, if I were you!!

I think you are ok to remove it yourself - the doctor who fitted mine had to fit a second one as she pulled the first one out by mistake when trimming the threads! So they come and go fairly easily. Could you not try a family planning clinic if you get no joy from your doctor?? Bleeding should settle down soon. I was very crampy and lightheaded for a while.

bootsmonkey · 16/11/2007 13:02

Mirena turned me into a psychotic cow!! Best out IME!!

dinny · 16/11/2007 13:03

all they do when they remove them is pull anyway, they don't open cervix or anything first. am impressed!

bluejelly · 16/11/2007 13:04

go to a proper fP clinic... sure they will respect your wishes...

bootsmonkey · 16/11/2007 13:05

on the up side, I didn't bleed at all....

mazmack · 16/11/2007 14:27

Can I put in a word for all receptionists please...I am a dental receptionist and get ENDLESS hassle from patients because I can't give them an appointment when they want it....hate to say it but we work for the dentist..like the GP's receptionist works for the doctor..and if they say you have to come to a special clinic or at a certain time then we have to make you an appointment at that clinic or we get fired...no matter how much you hassle us for something else!! Fair enough she shouldn't have been rude...but we "bloody receptionists" get way too much hassle for just doing our jobs and implementing the rules of our bosses...rant over

mazmack · 16/11/2007 14:30

I even get hassle because people have to wait too long for an appointment...like I could make the dentist work overtime just to see them when there are no free appointments...rant really over

mazmack · 16/11/2007 17:14

On a more helpful and less ranty note..on this forum here: curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1031978#i

people say it is risky to remove it yourself and that they like to check you out when they remove it so your GP should really see you now to make sure everything is OK..or a family planning clinic.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 16/11/2007 17:20

Fio you can insist. Explain why you really cant cope with any more children, DD's special needs etc. We got all that too before DH's vasectomy. I was 29 and DH was 36. We had to speak to a doctor for "counselling" and then we got it no probs.

@ pulling it out yourself, but more with your coil woman!!!! They tried to talk me into mirena too

yurt1 · 16/11/2007 19:51

FIO- bollocks to you being too young- especially given your circumstance- insist on a referral. As soon as we mentioned the A word the dr was keen to sterilise DH

Hope you get it sorted blardydoctors

ernest · 16/11/2007 20:16

blardydoctors, if my dh said to me "Plus in DP's words 'god you've been a right mardy cow for the last few weeks whats wrong with you' " when I had a 12 week old baby it'd take him a few days to recover!!!

A bit late now I guess, but I'm sure they can't make you wait 6 weeks to have it removed. I had a coil years ago and it was so uncomfortable I had to go and get it removed, in fact, I'd been back about it twice and they fobbed me off, I finally insisted I wanted it out and they discovered it was half out, hence all the discomfort

blardydoctors · 16/11/2007 22:11

Feeling fine now, no cramps and no bleeding hubloodyrah!

Mazmack, I am sure you are a lovely receptionist , but believe me when I say this one is not

ernest, i think he meant over and above the usual moodyness . I did forget to bin it though after I took it out and left it on the cistern in some paper. DP got the shock of his life when he went for a wee and saw it there and I told him it was my coil!

Thanks blardy , I try..

My defensive post was really sparked by FioFio's comment "bloody receptionists are so unuseful".

Anyway I didn't mean to detract from your thread, glad you haven't had any problems after removing it, and hope you get the coil you want eventually

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 17/11/2007 15:35

MANT bloody receptionists are such a bloody pain that "unuseful" (if it's even a word eh Fio?! ) is a compliment!

When I was a receptionist I was always nice friendly and sympathetic even when i couldn't help. Courtesy costs nothing.
