Pharmacist and sister said "no", nursery and mum said "yes", what do you think??

DD (16mo) has been very grumpy, high temp and extra cuddley on Monday and Tuesday and since Thursday morning has had about 10 spots all over her body.

Can they get chicken pox without getting many spots?

I asked the pharmacist in boots if the 3 on her head looked like chicken pox to her and she said she could barely see anything and it looked like a bite!

Nursery phoned to tell me they thought she had chicken pox Thursday morning (after I asked to keep an eye on her) and asked if I could come and get her, said she was behaving like normal and eating ok but to take her home anyway.

Do I take her to the doctor or keep with the calpol and calamine lotion?

What do the spots look like? Are they little blisters?

It is possible to have chicken pox with very few spots. It is also possible for a child to feel well when they have chicken pox.

Yes. Chickenpox can be very mild with few spots, or it can be a humdinger
If there is going to be an issue with nursery wanting her to stay off until spots have crusted (the norm) and it will cause problems at work, then I would get a verdict one way or the other from a GP.
Hope she feels better soon

Hula, we didn't notice ds had it for three days
dd was manifestly poorly with it on the other hand

Wisteria · 16/11/2007 11:25

My youngest had it at theat age and only had 5 spots on her tummy.

16m with spots and fever, I would say go to the GP just to be on the safe side.

You don't need to be covered in spots with chickenpox - mine never did. The first few spots to come out looked distinctly chickenpoxy within 24h, but deceived us at first. The later spots didn't develop quite as extensively, and didn't all look chickenpoxy, but we knew it was by then because of the first spots IYSWIM.

DD had it very mild too. Sent her to nursery but they caled us before lunch to say she had chicken pox. She was very well with it though, and was over it within a few days. Hardley knew she had then bar a few spots TBH.

I wouldn't bother with calamine BTW. When it dries it can make them more itchy. Piriton is best for the itching IMO.

The spots do start off looking like bites, but the redness doesn't spread (they're very 'compact' unless they get infected) and they soon develop a yellow blister on top.

You can have chickenpos with very few spots but the spots are very obviously chickenpox.

hippopotamouse · 16/11/2007 11:39

Thanks everyone!

They are like blisters but are starting to dry over now.

She had a fever for 2 days but is fine now. She's not even scratching!

DD goes to nursery on a Wednesday and Thursday so she won't need to go back until next Wednesday. Will they be gone by then?

Sounds like cp from your description. Will most likely have gone by ext week's nurser day.

That's good news Hula, I'm really busy at work just now as it's nearly Christmas (desperately trying not to use the word inconvenient! I know she can't help it!).
