I think I might need a hand hold. My DD 19yr old with a mole shape change

DD has always had a mole on her boob. She noticed a change in it and went to the gp this week who made a referral.

She took a call today, they have made her appointment as an emergency, want her to self isolate for 7 days before being put to sleep to have the mole removed and some of the surrounding area.

DD said she needed more notice for time off work (I know, I know and work have been wonderful with the short notice leave) they asked her to attend hospital today for a blood test but said they can only gauge a certain amount via blood test.

I have so many questions and they can't let me attend anything with her because of covid.

It all feels very urgent and I'm obviously not going to google but still thinking the worse.

The most important thing is to be able to appear strong for DD. I could cry but I won't. Can anyone help me work put what is happening and if there is anything I should be getting her to ask?

It sounds v strange- I went to a one stop clinic-had a suspected modular mole removed from toe-along with the nail- all done without going under- also had a needle biopsy on breast before without being put under.I honestly would think they need to actually see her in person in the dermatology dept first and then arrange an appointment. All I can say it please try not to worry ( I know!) and that mostly they turn out to be benign xx

I had this with a mole on my back - it didn't have any changes other than it had started getting a bit itchy. They 'shaved' it off on the GP surgery and sent it away as routine. It came back as having stage 2 changes so I had to go back to have more if the surrounding tissue cut out. Never had a problem since, this was about 10 years ago. I wasn't really worried at the time and I still have hundreds of moles but none that I think need checking out. I think your DD will be fine, I expect they are cutting out more than necessary in case it does come back as something so they don't need to put her through another procedure at a later date. Try not to worry.

Pinkpowderpuff · 14/05/2021 19:24

Oh, also, both my procedures were done under local anaesthetic, not a GA.

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 14/05/2021 19:25

Thank you, both posts make sense, I'm a worrier by nature and I don't want to piss DD off by fussing!

It was the talk of being put under that worried me because I didn't know it was a thing.

I'll try not to worry.

Quite embarrassing to say I don't know which is being put to sleep, is it ga?

Yes ga is asleep- I just had a nerve block in my toe( several injections) and didn’t feel a thing. Maybe she got confused and they said local anaesthetic-I can’t see they would do it under general-so she might have misheard. They may decide once they look at it to leave it alone.Hopefully it will all turn out fine !

Handhold 🙏

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 14/05/2021 20:09

Thank you. This is one of the many problems with not being able to have some one with you at consultations isn't it. She did see our gp face to face, I think it was because it was a noticeable change and sore, not showing properly in a picture sent over alone.

Handhold 🙏
Thank you, such a worry, although I'll try my best not to show it.

Of course you have to be strong and you know what it can be hard as a mum. However, my niece has just been through the same thing and everything turned out fine so please try not to worry. Hand held and who would be a mum ?

Thank you. That's reassuring, I'm pleased your niece is ok.

Being a mum never gets easier! I just wish I could go with her to these kind of things like normal.

Don’t worry. I had a mole removed 2 years ago from my side, GP referred to dermatologist and my appointment came within 2 weeks under the 2 week rule for possible cancers, I then had it removed a month later under local.
I’ve found another similar mole, sent an image to my GP, he referred straight to the same dermatologist and my appointment came through for 1 week’s time. Letter from dermatologist came yesterday to tell me they will be removing it at the first appointment to save time but that doesn’t mean it’s cancerous. I think they’ve got your DD in under the 2 week rule and they’re removing it as the GP has recommended that. It saves her having to return after the consultation.
The vast majority of moles are benign.

underneaththeash · 14/05/2021 20:33

It need checking, but puberty is a normal time for moles to change.

Mzy123 · 14/05/2021 20:39

Its good that they are so on the ball and I totally understand your worries. As I said my niece experenced the same thing and we were all concerned but she was fine and its easy to be ok after the event but I am sure all will all be OK and you will be able to reassure some other OP in the future . CanIBeACurlyGirl · 14/05/2021 22:05

Thank you so much, really reassuring. Another layer of education I suppose.

I haven't had any type of mole or cancer scare in my life, I really appreciate you all taking the time to reasure me.

Hi OP how are you doing?

CanIBeACurlyGirl · 21/05/2021 15:01

Hi, DD is self isolating after having a covid test today ready to go in to hospital on Tuesday.

I've rationalised it so they are just removing the risk and that will be the end of, hopefully.
