Should I take an iron supplement

I'm anemia, had further test to help find out cause which came back normal. I haven't been able to get an appointment since but I assume GP will prescribe iron. Any reason I shouldn't just start on supplements myself? Annoying to wait weeks when I could be feeling better by now.

If tests have shown you’re anaemic then you need to take iron. They’re cheap to buy and available in loads of places. Something like this www.pharmacyfirst.co.uk/ferrous-sulphate-tablets-200mg-60-tablets-feru1.html

And this info is useful on what not to eat or drink with or around it as it impacts on how you’ll absorb it

I would. The GP will prescribe the cheapest form of iron, which plays havoc with many people’s stomachs. I buy a gentler (but high %) form from Healthspan, as I can’t tolerate what the GP prescribed. Avoid the various liquids, drinks, sachets, etc as they’re not strong enough.

Thank you for replies and links. Tried googling and can't see reason to wait for appointment. Will get some myself.

Galfer syrup is liquid so gentle but high concentration.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

I alternate between taking Feroglobin liquid from Boots and Ferrous Fumarate 210mg tablets that are the same ones usually given on prescription but from my local pharmacy, they're both about £5 for 1 months worth.
