Hi my dd6 ,suffers from acid reflux and because of this her teeth have been rotting away and now they are reccomending she gets the whole 17 baby teeth she has left out in one go and give her a clean slate. she constantly suffers from abcesses and i know its for the best but 17!! i'm so worried about her she is to go to hospital and get it done under general anaesthetic. Has anyone ever had a child go under for this were they ok?? has anyone ever been through this?? help please xxxxxxxxx

Poor you and poor poor dd. No experience like this, but having had a couple of dental abcesses myself I can confidently say that having them extracted will be far less painful than continuing as they are

poor you and DD. Sounds horrible. No advice but bumping for you. Are you going to get some advice about how to prevent it happening in the future?

Holly78 · 15/11/2007 21:01

thanks, they are plasic coating her new teeth 3 times a year to protect them, bless her she just sits there but its heartbreaking.

Bless her poor little love. Is the reflux something she'll grow out of?

Buda · 16/11/2007 09:23

Oh poor love. My sis had 7 out at age 4. Long time ago though.

LiegeAndLief · 16/11/2007 09:35

I had 10 baby teeth removed to get my adult teeth to come through for a brace - in two goes though and I was 9 (sounds like your dd is younger?). Not under ga either. Sorry that was pretty useless wasn't it . Poor little thing, I hope it goes well. My ds had ga quite recently at 14 months and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had feared, the worst bit really was just leaving him there unconcsious, he was fine when he came round just very very hungry!

fullmoonfiend · 16/11/2007 09:37

liegeandlief - are you a fairport fan by any chance??? (my favourite album has that name)

fullmoonfiend · 16/11/2007 09:38

Holly, I had around 12 teeth rmoved for overcrowding when I was about 8. Poor dd.

hayCHingleBells · 16/11/2007 09:39

What can be done about the reflux?

wensley · 16/11/2007 11:35

Don't really know a great deal but just thought I'd put in the bit I do know about this! My niece has 4 children and 3 of them have had to have All of their teeth removed Two of them (twins) were 3 when this happened and their sister was 4.5. With two of them they extracted most of their teeth and then they had to go back for the last few One of the twins had the whole lot in one go.
Their problem was crumbling teeth and nobody has come up with a really good reason for this except some genetic thing. Her eldest child has a different father and his teeth are fine.
They all came through the ops very well overall with no problems. None of them have ever been good eaters and now their diet is somewhat limited. The eldest is now getting her second teeth which hopefully will be stronger. Good luck with your dd

My daughter had one of her back teeth removed and 3 others capped under general anaesthetic when she was 4 years old at Eastmans Dental Hospital, London.

My husband was with her and he said they were fab, taking great care with her and letting him know what was happening along the way.

My youngest DD had 6 baby teeth removed just before she turned 5 (she is now 6). She has a genetic condition and one of the problems is weak enamel in baby teeth (hopefully her adult teeth will be stronger) and she had two teeth (front one, and one next to it) fused together. She had these 2 teeth out plus 4 back ones.

She was given a GA and they didn't know what work was involved until she was under. When they told me they had removed 6 teeth I was gob-smacked.

One thing to be aware of, the 'wounds' healed really quickly but when we got home from hospital (about 2 hours after the operation) she vomited thick dark red gloopy blood. I panicked and didn't know whether to deal with her or ring the hospital (couldn't do both at the same time).

When she had finished being sick (fairly quickly) I rang the hospital and they said "oh, that is fairly normal, it is only where she has swallowed lots of blood during the operation and it has congealed". Nothing to worry about.

She had the next day off school and then went back.

She then had her one tooth left in the front knocked out in a playground incident but at least she looked symmetrical!

She currently has 2 bottom teeth coming through (growing nicely) but her front teeth are still just gummy! She has already got her year 6 molars (got them when she was 4).

Your DD will be fine, although I found the hardest part was that my DD had to have a pre-anaesthetic sedation before the GA because she was 'playing up' (but the anaesthetist did not know that this was the 4th time she had been under and knew what was going to happen) and when she came round from this she acted like a grumpy drunk. While in hospital, she tried to sit up and banged her head on the metal bedguard and she was more upset about the bump on her head than she was about having her teeth out.

fullmoonfiend - am indeed a fan of the mighty fairport - liege and lief is almost my favourite album! Sadly though ds prevented me going to Cropredy to see it live this year.

fullmoonfiend · 16/11/2007 19:12

L&L! We used to go to cropredy for years before dc. And when they were tinywe used to leave them with my parents so we could go. NExt year we are hoping to go en famille, finances permitting. We took them to Beautiful Days (The Levellers festival) in August and despite, hurricane winds, monsoon rain and mud, they had an absolute blast. So feel sure they would love the 'villagey' feel of Croppers. Come and talk folk music with me some time...

Holly78 · 17/11/2007 17:00

Hi all thanks for you kind messages, the dentist has said it is better if she gets them all out in the one go as she said its better to only go under ga one time. and to be honest thats what is worrying me the most.
She will always suffer acid reflux but they are going to put a special enamel coating on her teeth 3 times a year to protect them from the acid. Thank you for all your messages i will let you all know how she gets on Hollyx
