Aarrghhh. Dh's snoring is driving me UP THE WALL. Is there ANYTHING you have done about it that has worked? Seriously?

Dh has been to the doctor. He has been given sprays (which haven't done anything). He has seen people who know about snoring. They don't seem to think there is anything that can be done. He could do with losing a bit of weight but he does exercise and is probably a lot fitter than me.

But, and I am being perfectly honest here, I reckon I get about 1 night in every 2 weeks where I sleep through the whole night.

And when I wasn't working, although it was still knackering, I could take it easy and have a nap in the afternoon if I needed.

Now I am back at work, I am dead on my feet. I have a pretty horrid commute, am very busy at work and just cannot survive on a night of sleep where I've been woken up every hour on the hour by someone snorting in my ear .

No spare room, I have tried the couch but I can still hear him, have tried ear plugs but they just end up hurting my ears. I just do not know where to go next.

Sympathy foxinsocks. My dh is exactly the same - the kids can hear him from their rooms and from the foot of the stairs. He usually works two nights a week so I can sleep then but has been off sick for a month after having his cartlidge done. I can't even kick him at the moment to shut him up & [sleep deprived] And to top it off dd gets up at 5.30 which is just the time his snoring seems to tail off.

It's strange that Pruners mentions the GA as dh did stop for about a week after his recent anaesthetic. It's back now though and previously he didn't snore if asleep on his right side but now he does.

I think dh has sleep apnoea because sometimes his snoring changes and it goes completely silent for a few seconds as he seems to stop beathing on his out breath. So after willing him to stop snoring, I'm then willing him to breathe. He keep saying he'll go to the docs but hasn't so far. Grrr

tThat said here was an article in our local paper last night - guess what? - PCT won't pay for sleep study or surgery.

foxinsocks · 16/11/2007 11:03

thanks everyone

yes, I imagine sleep studies won't be paid for here either!

I have bought some Bio Ears this morning to try out (they were in Boots if anyone is thinking of doing the same!) so I'll report back!

Sorry only just read the rest of this - I use Quies - not available in Boots, have to get them in local pharmacies. Used them for over 10 years and have become a complete psychological crutch! Oh well. Do the job nicely.

DH used to snore horrifically, but finally went to GP and got referred for sleep study quite easily- turned out that he stopped breathing significantly 85 times an hour . His blood pressure was also v high in the morning due to all the adrenaline produced to get him breathing again. The CPAP is wonderful, and he even has a battery powered one for camping. My life is soo much better now that he doesn't wake me snoring / having stopped breathing for long periods.

ItsMyTurn · 16/11/2007 15:09

oh god. it is dismal isn't it. When i nudge/kick/thump dh to stop him he sayd that i am being unreasonable and aggessive and that he needs his sleep as he has a long drive to work

foxinsocks · 17/11/2007 19:12

that's interesting about the blood pressure because dh has that problem too (high in the mornings)

Well, just to let you know, that the Bio Ears were fabulous (except lots of my hair was stuck in the wax in the morning!). Annoyingly, I didn't get to see if they lasted me through the early hours of the morning (normally dh's worst snoring time) as ds had a nightmare and screamed the place down so I woke up with him but I'll try again tonight.

They are very comfortable and soft - I can still hear so they don't block out as much noise as the foam expandable ones but because they are more comfortable, I think it makes me sleep better.

In the meantime, I'll get dh to book himself a GP appointment and let you know what they say.

Thanks for all your advice everyone.

(And trib, would love to hear how things are going for you at the moment!).

fis - my dh is also a terrible snorer. He uses the stop snoring spray, and is much better with it, but when we were on holiday he was still terrible. As soon as we got back he was better, so I think the difference is actually the mattress and pillow that he uses. Both are tempur. Quite an expensive experiment for you to try, but you can try their stuff for 60 days I think and then return it if you don't like it.

lilolilmanchester · 17/11/2007 22:15

Seriously, try the breath right strips. Worked for us (to the point where we have sex more often cos I'm not so knackered due to snoring!)

CodDickinson · 17/11/2007 22:16

ear plugs

lilolilmanchester · 17/11/2007 22:16

breathE right, even............

pollywollybauble · 17/11/2007 22:20

i poke him until he rolls on his side.....i think he has taken it in subconsciously because i have to poke him less these days, he just rolls over ..

DoctorAficionadoDelArse · 17/11/2007 22:41

I once slapped DH full on in the chops for snoring. I didn't realise I'd done it til he woke with an almighty start and a very red cheek.

I was in that semi-conscious state but highly irritated at yet another night of eardrum busting snorts.

I vaguely remember thinking I should nudge him awake but in my sleepy head that translated to slapping in the face.

themoon66 · 17/11/2007 22:54

I can feel my blood pressure and anger simmering as I read this thread. DH is sat drinking lager and watching telly at the moment, so I just know I'm in for a night of road drill level noise and vibration tonight.

Total sympathy for you Fox. I know that horrible knackered feeling you suffer all day, but with no hope in your heart of a full night's sleep at any time in the near future

I've even put my face right up to his and shouted 'shut the fuck up with your fucking snoring'.

Am amazed we don't hear about more murders happening due to snoring blokes.

paolosgirl · 17/11/2007 22:59

Just come back to this. Re the PCT not paying (we don't have PCT's up here, so it might be different) - you don't have to go into the hospital for a sleep study. Dh wore a monitor thingie on his chest, and then took it into the hospital for them to work out the results.

If he stops breathing then it absolutely sounds like apnoea. Has he had his blood pressure checked? DH's was sky high (still quite high) and it was all linked to not getting enough oxygen at night, so his heart had to pump harder, causing higher blood pressure. Apnoea can be incredibly dangerous .

ZebedeesGhost · 17/11/2007 23:03

I can understand the irritation here, having had a couple of partners who snored (I'm a bloke and they were ladies btw)...

I used to push them out of bed it got so irritating as they lay on my chest snoring into it!

Cutting out their alcohol consumption seemed to be quite effective...

tribpot · 18/11/2007 09:36

Yes, my dh's sleep study was done at home. In fact we were offered an appointment quite quickly but had to turn it down as he was cold turkeying off morphine that week (that was fun).

His blood pressure is also high and no-one's ever linked the two things together to me, but it makes sense. He's on lisinopril for that and I might ask the GP to take his pressure again to see if the VPAP is helping (he has a different kind of mask now and that seems to have improved things a lot).

Having said all that, we're being summoned back to the sleep clinic tomorrow after the VPAP's annual service check and download, so the results must have shown something the consultant didn't like ..

Fox - will start a self-indulgent thread with my name in the title in chat!
