What will the GP do? He’s coughing a lot of stuff up on his lungs too.

He’s also got aortic stenosis, leaving valve, regurgitating mitral valve and awaiting ablation.

He’s on sotalol, could it be kidney damage?.

They were swelling last week but it wasn’t pitting.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2021 18:17

Is he on diuretics.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/05/2021 18:38

Hiya, no. Well not yet anyway.

320mg sotalol
5mg x 2 apixaban
Thyroxine
Symbicourt
Ventolin.
Mitprtazapine.

It could be CHF - he may need to go on diuretics. Definitely contact his cardiologist tomorrow

Alfxn · 11/05/2021 18:40

(Or get him seen sooner if his breathing becomes laboured!)

DogsSausages · 11/05/2021 18:43

I would seek medical advice, it could be a number of things and if its getting worse the doctor needs to review him. Has he had any heart scans and ecg done recently. Whats he coughing up?

ChequerBoard · 11/05/2021 19:35

Sounds like he has quite serious odema and needs diuretics to help his heart clear the fluid.

Please call 111 and get him seen.

Might help bump him up the list to get his ablation done too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/05/2021 20:38

It’s not severe, I’m a podiatrist and I’ve seen worse but I wondered if it was the sotalol causing it.

I’ll ring his drs early and email cardio if I’m not happy with the treatment plan. My thought was I might bump him up the ablation list but when they see his gel scan results it’ll be a TAVI too.

He’s not had a scan since jul 20 and it was at the last hospital which was rubbish.

DogsSausages · 11/05/2021 21:09

Have you looked up,the side effects of sotolol, what treatment plan do you think they will come up with. Cardiac disease can also cause odema, was it the scan or the hospital that were rubbish. Can he call the doctor or 111 himself for advice, what is he coughing up? Phlegm or fluid.,

whataballbag · 11/05/2021 21:25

DF has heart failure, regurgitation & mitral valve prolapse, and experienced swelling & coughing in the earlier stages - keep an eye out for breathlessness too.

GP first thing seems a good idea.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2021 22:49

My dad had an ablation for AF and it was a complete success. Hopefully it will help your husband.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/05/2021 10:56

Kidney function blood test on Friday. The drs doing it himself 😲 as they’ve no appointments.

ChequerBoard · 12/05/2021 12:27

That's seems very laisse faire for the symptoms you are describing.

I'd be wanting him seen today to assess his heart function properly.

For context I have 26 years of experience living with my DH's heart failure, initially diagnosed as a chest infection.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/05/2021 13:06

I’ve left an answer machine message with the cardiologists secretary outlining my concerns. One day I’ll be able to do this without my voice cracking at the end but today was not that day.

We’ll see if they think dr is on the right track or not.

I should’ve stayed single and got a cat or 5. Stick to what you know, that’s what I say.

ChequerBoard · 12/05/2021 14:24

@Fluffycloudland77 Good on you for chasing up the cardiologist Thanks

Hope you get a date for the ablation soon, DH had one about 18mths ago and it made a huge difference.

DogsSausages · 12/05/2021 15:08

My family member had similar and we just went to A&E. They quickly sorted out bloods, ecg, xrays and a echo and started the right treatment. He didnt have quite such an extensive cardiac history or was waiting for surgery but obviously something was not quite right and he was soon home after a few days.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/05/2021 16:10

Yeah we tried that, the consultant told him off for going in as it makes them look bad. Hence the new consultant.

He just doesn’t get good care & I don’t know why.

OP posts:
DogsSausages · 12/05/2021 17:56

The doctor told him off. How old is your dh 3? How is he feeling. Can PALS help if you think he gets poor care.

ConfusedAdultFemale · 12/05/2021 18:03

Yeah we tried that, the consultant told him off for going in as it makes them look bad. Hence the new consultant.

So the consultant would rather a dead patient? Hmm

Undeuxdrei · 12/05/2021 18:32

I found pals very helpful. I sent an email requesting a second opinion and they were very prompt to get back to me. Very helpful. Got an appointment a week later.
If he's already got lung issues (can see he's on inhalers), an infection (he's coughing stuff up) could tip him over into other issues. He may well need antibiotics, diuretics etc. Is he breathless,
what's he coughing up ?

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/05/2021 18:42

That was after a PALS complaint. Hence the switch to a different hospital.

That was the night he said “you would probably benefit from ablation, but it’s friday night”.

Is he under a heart failure team?

I have mitral prolapse and regergitation as well as atrial fibrillation and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I am ineligible for any more procedures due to the construction of my heart but I am on medication for my AF and I had a mitraclip fitted for my valve as I would have died in open heart surgery.

He needs to be seen ASAP by the heart failure nurses and hopefully given diuretics such as furosemide. In the meantime he should limit his fluid intake to around 1500ml a day at the very most, but be seen as a matter of urgency so they can sort out diuretics.

I am on furosemide and epleronone for and I have a 1500ml restriction. But as you don’t have access to someone who can prescribe diuretics at the moment the restriction is a good place to start until you do.

And cut out as much salt as he can, salt leads to fluid retention.

Then dial 111 for advice if you’re unable to speak to the heart failure team.

AlternativePerspective · 12/05/2021 18:54

PS: there is always a waiting list for ablation, so in the meantime he should be on meds for his AF.

And I hate to say this but ablation isn’t always a magic bullet. In some instances it is, but I know more people who have had several ablations than haven’t.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/05/2021 19:02

Hiya fluffy sorry to hear your dh is unwell, he definitely sounds like he needs some diuretics tbh. Is he keeping his feet up? Is he breathless?

DogsSausages · 12/05/2021 19:20

What will you do now, does the new hospital have an A&E or is he just going to wait to have a blood test on Friday.
