In the morning my dh smells of fruit, well rather the air in the room smells of fruit. A bit liked cooked raspberries or something. What could it be? He is a bit of a hypochondriac and is saying he thinks his organs aren't working (note non specificness about 'organs') and going on at me about it. I thought it could just be from red wine but it is there whether or not he has had any (and he doesn't neck loads by the way just a glass or two).

your not describing it as unpleasent, could it be his pheromones? my dh smells of blackcurrents.

AHHHH I knew I shouldn't google it but here:

Bad breath is a reasonably common symptom that may be the simple result of poor dental hygiene. However, different types of breath odor can also indicate certain types of serious medical conditions. For example, a "fruity breath odor" is one of the characteristic symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be fatal within hours or days. Another example is a "fecal breath odor" which can indicate certain types of intestinal blockage. Have any breath odor symptoms examined promptly by a medical professional.

He isn't smelling of pear drops is he?

3littlefrogs · 15/11/2007 15:38

You could start by getting him to get his urine tested - is the smell like peardrops.nailvarnish remover at all?

Is he thirsty alot/weeing alot/losing weight?

He is clearly worrying about something not working properly - maybe he should go and see the GP anyway?

3littlefrogs · 15/11/2007 15:40

Unpleasant bad breath can be a sign of kidney failure, but it doesn't sound as if it is unpleasant.

Peardrops type of smaell is a sign of possible diabetes - hence the question re thirst etc.

3littlefrogs · 15/11/2007 15:42

Sorry about typing - my fingers are numb with cold.

PrettyCandles · 15/11/2007 15:46

Are you sure it's him? Could either of you be farting in the night, and that's the residual smell? Have you washed the bedlinen since noticing this smell? Sometimes your perspiration can smell of certain foods that you've eaten, or by toiletry products, the bedlinen gets impregnated with it, and then emit the smell at night when you warm the bed up by sleeping in it.

lucyellensmum · 15/11/2007 16:13

ksmum, dont panic, it could just be that that overnight he is going into "starvation mode" which is sort of like a diabetic state. We then burn up fats etc and produce ketones which smell "fruity". I would encourage him to get a urine test to rule out diabetes, but maybe he just needs to have a wee snack before bed.

lucyellensmum · 15/11/2007 16:17

thats the trouble with google, ketoacidosis in a diabetic is a bad thing, but they usually get this as a result of very low blood sugar and can go into diabetic coma. This rarely happens unless taking insulin. As for intestinal blockage - bad breath would be the least of your worries, i think the vomitting and severe pain might be more of a give away. Kidney failure, might also be a bit ill!

I would rule out diabetes to be safe and a blood screen couldnt hurt but i bet its nothing serious.

thanks for your messages. ita not his breath, just an odour in the air. And its definitely not farts. Not sure about starvation mide, he eats a LOT. Myabe that could be it though, his body is so used to constant food intake that it can't handle being asleep!
