not a lot as she has to get whatever it is that's upset her out of her system. make sure she doesn't get dehydrated- try diaralyte from the chemists- it's just minerals etc to replace those lost. Drink plenty of boiled cooled water and if she's still ill in the am then phone your gp for an opinion on whether to take her in or not

How old is she? Current thinking on tummy bugs with small children has recently changed and "they" don't suggest you withold food if they will still eat it (because even if only a few calories are being digested it's better than none - I think). If you can get them to drink Dioralyte it's good stuff - but tastes pretty foul unfortunately. Not sure you can give the old bung em up remedies to littleuns. Ask your pharmacist perhaps?

Keep up the fluids as much as poss, as that's always the worry with diarreah. I think these bugs can really take it out of the poor wee mites.

thanks am going to doc myself in morn for change of ad's, so might ask him whilst there.
she's drinking loads but read my book from nhs about toddlers and it said to reduce amount and give less at mealtimes????v.confusing as i always thought more fluids when got diarhea????????

I think children make the best diagnosis sometimes - they go with their bodies instincts. If she's eating crisps it's probably comfort for feeling yucky. Bananas are great food whenever - so that's fine! If she wants to drink - I would let her as much as she wants. Hope she feels better in the morning! Doc will probably tell you there's something going round - mine always does in the same situation! These things shouldn't last too long...

Try Banana Acidophilus Plus by Biocare - its awesome and they love it in their milk.

Carameli · 03/11/2004 18:41

Naturedoc, myy dd is just 1 and has a similar problem with runny nappies at the moment. Can a 1 yr old have that? How much of that powder would you put in her milk?

Catbert · 03/11/2004 20:01

Hi MMW - hope little one is feeling better today (and you of course!)

It's prob too late, but I wouldn't have taken her swimming, coz I remember being turfed out of the pool once as another toddler had leaked runny poo out of her nappy and they had to clean the whole pool!!!

NatureDoc · 03/11/2004 21:56

From 6 months plus the dosage is 1/2 teaspoon daily until things get better - keep the pot in the fridge. Do not microwave.

Try adding it to 1/4 strength milk and build up slowly over a few days to full strength.

MrsMiaWallace · 04/11/2004 21:38

hi catbert, thanks for concern, i didnt take her swimming, wouldnt like it if someone else knowing took their dd/ds's with diarhea.
its on and off now, but had a bad night (see 'feeling low'im feeling really down)

she wont drink any milk or eat yogs(her favourite) at minute so couldnt get any of that banana mix into her, she evens refusing chocolate, which im glad about but want her to eat 'something', doc at hosp said she could go for 2 weeks with 'no food' at all!!!

Best to trust her instincts, I think. Adults get tummy bugs and we make ourselves eat, when we don't feel like it. Toddlers have more sense. As long as she's getting some liquid (as everyone says, Dioralyte is good, if she'll take it. My ds1 loves the stuff.), it's nothing to worry about. And if it's continuing because she's lost salts, the Dioralyte will sort it out.
