Periods going AWOL and not pregnant - have you been there ?

Grasping at straws after unhelpful visit with GP.
Not had a period in 65 days.... not pregnant...... am 36....
Anyone been there.
I was always regular before, I have 2 kids...

What could it be ? Will they come back ???? There is talk of possibly being pre-menopausal !!!!! The blood tests said I had a higher than normal (but not worringly abnormal) FSH levels... no other hormones (LH and prolactin) were tested (hence the "unhelpful" comment)... so back for more blood test on Friday.

Thanks

i have periods every four months, then six months, then a month, then two months, been to the doctor, nothing wrong, got pregnant very easily, all very weird

velcrobott · 02/11/2004 21:12

Oh that's reassuring... so how do you get pregnant..... is it "accidental" or do you scrutenise your body????
Were you always this "irregular"?

Urgh - I extemely long cycles between DD1 and DD2 - DD2 was completely accidental! NO idea where I was, and probably should have taken more care. Oops. However, I have had completely the opposite prob since DD2 - 2 periods which lasted 6 bloody weeks, and ended up on 4 weeks of progesterone to try and calm things down. Still all over the place. Hormones still up and down, and making me feel bizarre. Used to be v. regular 29 day cycle. Pregnancy eh? Huh!

Less than one percent of women in the UK reach meopause before 40 I have heard - have you any other symptoms apart from the lack of periods?

velcrobott · 02/11/2004 21:20

No obvious other symptom..... well if you consider mood swings

I can't really help as I was just the opposite - I used to have infrequent periods before I got pregnant, anything between 4 and 13 months - and since they came back after having dd they've been every 31 days as regular as clockwork. I haven't got a clue how I got pregnant (well, apart from the obvious!) as I was also on the pill.

Hopefully someone will come along soon with something more relevant to you - just didn't want you to think you were talking to yourself!

velcrobott · 03/11/2004 10:08

Thanks
Actually i have just realised that this hormonal problem started at the same time as a siginificant hair loss ...... grrrrr......

have you had your thyroid levels tested? iirc irregular periods/hairloss could be symptoms of an underactive thyroid. this is very easily correctable with hormone tabs.

velcrobott · 03/11/2004 21:45

If there is one thing the doc did test was thyroid and she said it was completely normal....
Doc doesn't think it is PCOS either.... but that is without hard facts.
Thanks everyone - your contributions are helping me stress less about this

After I came off the pill, I had no periods for 2 yrs...went to docs and find I have an overactive pituitary gland (v. high levels of prolactin). I take tablets to control it and now have regular periods. Specialist says they have no idea what causes it.

Goldfish · 03/11/2004 22:03

Hi Velcrobot, Just like you i have 2 kids. Last year, when I was 38, after always having a regular cycle i had no period for 4 months. Went to Drs eventually and was told I had a high FSH level and could be going through the perimenopause. I was referred to a specialist and would you believe the day I went to see him I got my period. Everying was ruled out such as thyroid and he said it looked like I was approaching menopause But as i had my period then to see how things went. He said if they stopped again to go back and consider HRT. I immediately thought no way, I am only 38 and my mum is still going through the menopause. Then I got my periods for 4 or 5 months. I then didn't get one for 5 months and kept thinking I really should go to the Drs but I tried no to think about it. When it came a month ago (with a vengance) I just thought well thats another few months till I have to see the Dr again. I find it really depressing to be like this at my age so I am trying to ignore it, silly I know. Sorry to waffle on but your post struck a chord. Hope you get on ok on Friday and please let us know your results. Good luck.

velcrobott · 03/11/2004 22:18

Thanks guys.... in a strange way it is reassuring!
I will have to delay blood test on friday due to a silly commitment I can't change now but will have it done next week. GP doesn't want to see me for anothet mont .
I guess it is stressful as I now want a 3rd child... of course I didn't want one when I was "perfectly normal"...typical !!!!!

Of course I will keep you posted

two years ago i had laser treatment after a dodgy smear test. the next smear said that things were still a bit strange but then i got the all clear. they told me if i had any strange periods to go back to the hospital. id always been regular but suddenly things went haywire after about two normal periods. i gave it four months and on the fifth month i suddenly realised that i hadnt had a period for about 6 weeks....it was because they had been so irregular that i didnt notice for so long. i was terrified and went to contact the hospital but for some strange reason i wanted to rule out pregnancy beforehand...(no idea why as we had been careful) guess what...ahem..nine months later there was dd! very strange though as i wasnt pregnant when everything went haywire..i was always regular before ds, after ds and now after dd. never did find out what caused it.

I have similar problems. Now and again I have a few periods that are regular but then they disappear for five or six months at a time. I had tests when I was trying to get pregnant and was told it definately wasn't a sign of the menopause (this was about 9 years ago, I'm 37 now)but was diagnosed eventually with polycystic ovary syndrome. Perhaps this is relevant to you?

Also, I didn't have a period for two years after ds was born but then we had a bad fire (which my mother was extremely lucky to survive according to fire officer)and my period arrived that evening. It's convinced me that shock and stress can also have an effect on the menstrual cycle.
