What's the best nasty chemical free cream I can put on DS1's sore chin?

DS1's skin really suffers in the cold. The area under his bottom lip to his chin is already red raw after just a few cold days. In the past I put vaseline on it but after recent talk of petrochemicals and parabens wanted to try something natural - any ideas?

It would be great if it also worked on my manky, dry lips too!

when my DS had skin problems,(mild excezma, dry patches) I found Aveemo to be the best, cream +bath oil

Chopster · 15/11/2007 10:41

aloe vera?

Bewilderbeast · 15/11/2007 10:41

Neal's Yard baby balm is really good for top to toe skin problems incuding nappy rash. I've started slathering DS's face in it before he goes to bed because he drools in the night and makes his face very sore.

aloe chopster (oh ha ha the old ones are the best!!)

I don't know where you are, but Waitrose do a lovely thing called Bottom Butter, made out of two types of olive oil and camomile and vanilla, solidified so its like vaeline, but its got no chemicals in it. I think you could probably cook with it. and its a cracking lip balm for mums too. Also sold in John Lewis, if this is any help.

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 10:44

Sorry, I am taking this seriously.

Will check out Aveemo and Neal's Yard, I had some of that baby balm in a goody basket once, it was good stuff.

Aloe vera gelly (yes, spelled that way)

PrettyCandles · 15/11/2007 10:45

Lansino if you want greasy.

Neutrogena lipstick thingy (sometimes called Labios) can go on other bits as well as lips, but will sting on already chapped skin.

Aveeno very soothing and won't hurt chapped skin, but not very protective if he's dribbling.

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 10:46

Yep, Waitrose in town, will check for Bottom Butter (Am in very daft mood, sorry)

here - miracle in a tube

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 10:49

He doesn't dribble (he's 8) but it gets really sore. He had severe eczema as a baby and this like the last remnant of it, flares up in the cold. His asthma is bad too at the moment so he's a little run down. Is it zinc that is good for immunity and skin?

My lips are foul, I use lip salve but it doesn't seem to help, it's worse at the moment as I have a cold which always makes it worse.

BellaBear · 15/11/2007 10:49

Lansinoh

Nedmum · 15/11/2007 10:50

You laugh at bottom butter, but let labios go unremarked upon?

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 10:51

totaleclipse - I think I've got some of that somewhere, a friend had an aloe vera party fundraiser and I bought that and some hand wash - you are a genius, will go and find it.

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 10:54

labios did make me titter.
I have found the Aloe Vera stuff but it is moisturizing lotion not the gelly, also it contains parabens which I'm trying to avoid. (Watched the How toxic are you thing and have become more wary).

Kamillosan nipple cream is pretty good for sore skin.

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 10:59

fakeblond - I'm trying to find the link. There was a series on Channel4 about chemicals etc in skin care products etc. I didn't see it all but someone linked to a website about it. Vaseline is a by product of the petrochemical industry (according to my baby massage lady). I wanted to find something plant based and chemical free.

Oh damn, still buy a tube for the winter, its very pricey but it goes a long way, and its very very good, impressed the socks of me

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 11:03

this was the link from another thread not scare mongering in any way, just passing on something of interest

MegaLegs · 15/11/2007 11:06

Actually, I have just answeres by own query with that link as it lists sites that seel chemical free porducts.

PrettyCandles · 15/11/2007 11:41

I don't use vaseline or baby oil if I can help it as they sometimes bring me out in a rash. But then I am a very delicate blossom.
