Hi. My 10 month old has been unwell for a week now. He has been vomiting and has bad diahhorea(sp?). I had him at docs on Friday as he wasn't getting any better, then his vomiting began to ease off over last few days, now I have just put him to bed and before I put him down, he threw up all over me. He is very pale...has been for a few days and is not eating any food. Also his nappies are really bad, still.

The doctors just said it needed to run it's course. Should I just leave it or should I take him back to docs???

Take him back pinkroses, it can't do any harm to get another opinion. It will hopefully put your mind at rest as well.

{{{hugs}}}

i would take him to a&e for second opinion. not to worry, but it will put your mind at rest if a pediatriction checks him over too. just explain that your gp was no help and it is still continuing.hth

I would take him back to the doctors - a week is a long time for this to be going on. Is he at risk of dehydration? Will he keep down water?

LIZS · 02/11/2004 19:20

I'd take him back. If you followed advice re restricted diet, fluids etc then I wouldn't have expected him to be sick again but recovering by now. Keep him off dairy and use rehydration sachets as much as possible in the meantime.

Take him back. You can never be too careful, and a week is a long time for this to still be going on. Hope he feels better soon.

I'm making sure he is drinking plenty. I was just surprised that he has been sick again. I did think he was getting better, and his nappies have not improved at all.

if we were paying for the treatment, he would be taken straight in and given best care, but because its the nhs, they'll make you wait

I remember being told by my GP that they wouldnt send stool samples until the d+v had been going on for 10days for my ds2(I think he was roughly 8-9mo at the time). He also had a "relapse" after what appeared to be signs of recovery. I stuck to bf, water little and often, plain rice cakes and plain bread sticks. As he got hungrier I offered rice and marmite on toast. The GP said that milk products were fine, there was no indication that they would make the d+v worse, but to avoid really creamy stuff so ds2 had plain yoghurt with a bit of fruit puree in it as well as continuing with bfs. By 10 days the vomiting had stopped but the diarrhoea continued for about another 5days or so as his diet got back to normal. Then I gave him bio yoghurt to put back some of the gut bugs he'd probably lost over the previous weeks.
If you are worried about him I'd go back to the docs. It'll ease your mind to get another opinion and it can do no harm!
